Durban - Nehawu on Thursday threatened to bring KwaZulu-Natal's health department to a standstill unless the department's head was fired.

"If there's a need we will go for a total shutdown," the National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union's (Nehawu) provincial secretary Pakama Ndumakazi told reporters in Durban.

The union wanted Dr Sibongile Zungu sacked and charged with corruption, and for the department's chief financial officer Mashaka Ravhura to be reinstated.

Zungu's contract ended in October and has been renewed on a monthly basis.

The union has long called for her suspension citing mismanagement.

Nehawu's provincial chair Thobile Nkosi said the union believed Ravhura fell foul of Zungu when refused to follow her orders blindly.

Ravhura has been suspended for more than a year. Neither the department nor the province's Health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo have indicated the outcome of disciplinary proceedings against him.
