"The fire in the settlement has been extinguished by the Durban fire department," said spokesperson Robert McKenzie.

There was still a lot of smoke, he said.

The fire was fuelled by strong winds. The cause of the blaze was not known.

Paramedics said about 100 dwellings had been affected.

"There is a feeling of anguish on scene from the residents, many who have lost everything in the blaze. Many of the dwellings' occupants are at work and will be coming home to the tragedy."

A ward councillor would apparently meet affected residents regarding alternative accommodation, he said.

A woman was treated for burns while a man was treated for an electrical shock.
