Cape Town - Cape Town firefighters were called out to four separate veld fires on the slopes of Signal Hill on Thursday, the fire department said.

The first report, at 10:38, was of a fire on Military Road.

"We sent three fire engines to the scene and the fire was extinguished at 14:25," chief fire officer Ian Schnetler said.

At 12:40 another fire broke out near High Level Road, Sea Point.

Six fire engines and eight other support vehicles were dispatched.

The fire was brought under control soon after 14:00, but firefighters were by mid-afternoon still trying to extinguish the fire.

There was no damage to surrounding property.

"At around 15:00, another two fires started on Signal Hill and crews with their appliances are racing to control the fires," Schnetler said.

"Two helicopters and a third large helicopter have been dispatched to assist.

"South African National Parks are assisting with Working on Fire and volunteer crews."

The SA Weather Service earlier this week issued a red fire alert for the Cape Metro.

No one will make me believe that these fires are natural ! I know there is a lot of wind, but anyway, fires start too close from each other everytime. Please punish arsonists ! This has to stop !!!!

The place has been named the Signal Hill, after all. Some people must have tried to demonstrate how the signal fires were used in the old days. Sorry about the bad joke.

Either arsonists or people who flick their cigarette buts out. Fires mostly seem to start at the roadside.
