Johannesburg - Five people are expected to appear in a Kimberley court after two people were shot - one dead - in separate attacks in the Northern Cape, police said on Sunday.

Colonel Priscilla Naidu said on Friday night, a 28-year-old man was standing at his gate in Lerato with his fiancée when five men approached them, with one asking for a tuck shop in the area.

The man said none were open at that time but suddenly one of the group grabbed his cellphone.

There was a struggle and the man was shot in the head.

The five men ran away.

The man was rushed to Kimberley Hospital where he is in a coma.

About 40 minutes after he was shot, police believe the same group went to a tuck shop in Ivory Park, Roodepan.

Shop owner Shamien Ahmed, 35, had just driven into his driveway when they approached him.

They tried to rob him as he got out of his car and shot him in his left cheek.

He died in hospital.

Naidu said: "Immediately after these two incidents, Roodepan police launched an extensive search for the trigger happy suspects."

From descriptions provided by witnesses, police found three of the men and arrested them in the area, followed by a fourth arrest. On Saturday the fifth arrest was made in Galeshewe.

The firearm has not yet been recovered.

All five, who are between 17 and 24, are expected to appear in the Kimberley Magistrate's Court on Monday.
