Johannesburg - Five men, including a tavern owner, were arrested on Saturday for hacking to death a community policing forum (CPF) member in Mthatha, Eastern Cape police said.

The 36-year-old man and four other CPF members had requested an illegal tavern owner to stop operations when the incident took place early on Saturday morning, said spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela.

The patrons chased after the CPF members and attacked them with pangas and stones.

One man died and another 68-year-old was in a critical condition.

The tavern was closed down by the poolice.
