Cape Town - A licence check on a “suspicious” car led to the arrest of five people, who are expected to appear in court on Monday for the suspected involvement in house robberies and hijackings in Cape Town.

Officers in Bishop Lavis were alerted to a silver VW Polo heading toward Montana, on Thursday night.

After checking the registration number, it was discovered that the vehicle had been hijacked in Cape Town in April, provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Andre Traut confirmed in a statement.

“The 23-year-old female driver was arrested. Upon further investigation her partner, aged 34, was also arrested at their residence in Montana as he was the one who gave her the vehicle to drive.”

While police were at the couple’s house, a white Honda with three occupants arrived.

This car was also searched, Traut said.

Police found an unlicensed firearm with a removed serial number, two crowbars and an ax.

“The vehicle was hijacked in Parow during May.”

All three men - aged 24, 27 and 29 - were arrested.

“Investigations on the scene revealed that these three suspects allegedly perpetrated a house robbery 20 minutes earlier,” Traut confirmed.

“The circumstances surrounding the involvement of the suspects in house robberies and vehicle hijackings are being investigated.”
