IT was a busy weekend for emergency services in KZN as a spate of accidents left five people dead and 50 more injured.

In the early hours of Saturday morning three family members lost their lives when their car crashed into a truck on the N3 near Hammarsdale, leaving the highway closed in both directions.

According to ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing, it is believed the family was travelling towards Pietermaritzburg when a truck travelling in the opposite direction apparently lost control and overturned. The load on the truck was ejected and hit the car.

“When ER24 paramedics and other services arrived on scene they found the truck on its roof. It was engulfed in flames. Fire and Rescue Services extinguished the fire,” Bodasing said.

“On assessment of the car it was found that three passengers, all women, were trapped. Unfortunately there was nothing paramedics could do for them. They were declared dead”.

In a separate incident on Friday night, there was a crash between a taxi and a small bus on the N2 near Harding where two people were killed and 18 were left injured.

According to KZN EMS spokesperson Robert McKenzie, five of the patients were critically injured while three had sustained serious injuries.

“One of the critically injured patients, was a child of about five years old, who had reportedly been ejected from the minibus, when the crash occurred,” McKenzie said.

There were also multiple collisions in Durban, Shelly Beach, Bizana, Umvoti, Phoenix and Tongaat
