Polokwane - A group of Limpopo awaiting trial prisoners decided to flex their muscles a little more than usual in the exercise yard when they managed to cut through wire mesh and hot-footed it into the night in Ritavi.

The five - Lazarus Moseamedi, Stanley Sipho Nkwana, Kgomotso Mokhabudi, Rufus Mkhawana and Dumisani Nukiwe Khosa - were all arrested for serious crimes and escaped on Monday night, said police spokesperson Colonel Ronel Otto.

Moseamedi was arrested for the murder of police Lieutenant Yezindaba Meshack Shikati, 54, and the attempted murder of a police constable Carrol Machaba when they were responding to a complaint at the Mabuza tavern at Patanage village on June 29. They were ambushed when they arrived and their service pistols were also stolen.

Regarding the other four - Nkwana was arrested for attempted murder, Mokhabudi for murder, robbery and vehicle theft, Mkhawana for rape, robbery and assault and Khosa was arrested for rape.

Ritavi is near the Great Letaba River, close to Tzaneen.

Limpopo police commissioner Lieutenant General Fannie Masemola said an urgent and in-depth investigation into the circumstances around the escape had been launched.

"If we find that there was any negligence or operational procedures not being followed by our members, internal departmental steps will [be] immediately taken," he said.
