Johannesburg - Five people were killed when their taxi was hit by an alleged drunk driver in Alrode on Saturday, the Ekurhuleni metro police said.

Inspector Kobeli Mokheseng said the five passengers, including a 5-year-old child, were killed when a Volkswagen Golf lost control and crashed into the taxi.

The Golf was travelling toward Alberton when it veered out of control and rolled into oncoming traffic.

"As it rolled into oncoming traffic, it crashed into a Toyota Corolla and landed on a taxi travelling in the opposite direction."

The driver of the Toyota Corolla sustained minor injuries and the rest of the passengers in the taxi were taken to hospital in a serious condition.

"An intoxicated 37-year-old male VW Golf driver, who claimed that he was not behind a steering wheel at the time of the accident sustained slight injuries," said Mokheseng.

The man was arrested and was expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court soon.
