Johannesburg - Five people were killed in a head-on collision near Ermelo in Mpumalanga, the provincial community safety and security department said on Monday.

A white Toyota sedan with eight occupants was heading towards Piet Retief from Ermelo on Sunday night when it overtook another car and collided with an oncoming minibus taxi, spokesperson Joseph Mabuza said.

"The driver and four passengers of the Toyota were killed. Six more [people] are in a serious condition at the Ermelo hospital. Among the deceased were two children," Mabuza said.

MEC Vusi Shongwe sent his condolences to the families of the victims and said such accidents were unnecessary.

"Accidents like [these] can be avoided if drivers obey the rules of the road," Shongwe said in the statement.
