Johannesburg - Five men were sentenced to life imprisonment for murder by the Free State High Court, sitting in Virginia, on Thursday, police said.

Motlatsi Mokete, Leaowa Diphoko, Sibabalo Baba, Thabele Mokoena and Sehloho Rantai were convicted of killing 17-year-old Moses Tyali in Thabong, Welkom, on December 17 2013, spokesperson Warrant Officer Malebo Khosana said.

The five are all in their early 20s.

A sixth man was acquitted as he could not be positively identified by witnesses.

The attack happened around 06:30 in Orange Grove. Six men forced their way into a house by breaking down the door and found Tyali inside the house.

"They assaulted him with a beer bottle and knives were used to stab him," Khosana said.

"He, however, managed to escape the house, but they chased him and caught him on the next street where they repeatedly stabbed [him] and left him on the scene where he died."

Three of the men were arrested on the same day as the murder, while the other three were arrested on January 23 2014.

"Judge Fouche Jordan commended the witnesses for their bravery in testifying against these gangsters," Khosana said, adding that the judge encouraged community members to continue to come forward and testify against criminals.
