Durban - Officials on Monday discovered five rhino that have been killed at a game reserve in KwaZulu-Natal.

Hluhluwe Game Reserve spokesperson Musa Mntambo confirmed to News24 that the rhino carcasses had just been found.

"An investigations team has been assembled and we are currently assessing the situation."

Rhino poaching has escalated this year with over 1 500 killed to date.

Mntambo previously stated that as of June this year, most rhino poached were in KwaZulu-Natal, with 13 killed in a single month.

"We are a few up in deaths compared to this time last year."

He said 44 arrests had been made this year so far in poaching cases.
