Flights: Minister violated ethics code

2012-11-26 17:15

Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma should consider reprimanding Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson for violating the executive ethics code, Public Protector Thuli Madonsela said on Monday.

Madonsela said the department’s acting director general should recover about R150 000 Joemat-Pettersson unlawfully incurred for return flights of her two children and their au pair from Sweden to South Africa in January 2010.

The minister travelled to Sweden in December 2009 on official business where she held meetings on matters relevant to her portfolio.

The trip was combined with a family holiday, which started at the end of the official trip on 23 December.

Joemat-Pettersson, however, had to cut the holiday short when she was recalled by the Presidency and returned on 1 January 2010.

"The return trips of the minister’s children and au pair were paid for by the state in violation of the provisions of paragraph 3.4 of Chapter 6 of the Ministerial Handbook, in the amount of R151 878,” Madonsela found in her report.

The public protector also investigated whether the minister used public funds in occupying expensive accommodation at hotels while she was awaiting the allocation of her official residences in Cape Town and Pretoria.

If the demonstrations against minimum wage were "historic", then BREAKING the ethics code must surely be as well?

      alf.pop - 2012-11-26 17:37

o it the ANC way: Steal what and where you can and when you are caught out deny, deny, deny and as a last resort play the race card!

      Desilusionada - 2012-11-26 17:59

Iconic or histrionic, but definitely not historic. They do it every day, not just in the past. This little miss Fur is going to see her you-know-what very soon. Without the mirror she bought in Paris....

      BulletProof. - 2012-11-26 18:09

This is fraud Jail her, what reprimend?

      shirley.steenkamp - 2012-11-26 18:26

Send her and her arrogance to jail! This will however NEVER happen-its the anc way!

      goeie.jaarling - 2012-11-26 18:32

Show some respect, she was disadvantaged by apartheid...both her parents were heavy papsak drinkers and she was born with alcohol syndrome. It is in actual fact remarkable that she can even speak with the little brains she was born with...

      mabula.mtsweti - 2012-11-26 18:57

If there was a cANcer competion on who's more corrupt than the other, it will be extremely, if not impossible, to decide who the winner is! Ah man! The word despise comes to mind!

      ray.priestley.79 - 2012-11-26 19:04

A reprimand? So if you steal a few million,is that a first warning? And R10m a final warning. And R248m dismissal-who cares? A wonderful retirement package.

      tiaan.vanderberg.75 - 2012-11-26 21:20

Maybe if she pays back the money, the department can contribute to the salaries of the De Doorns farmworkers she so vehemently protects against the self serving racist capatalist colonialists who abuse them for self enrichment.

      nigel.burgess.334 - 2012-11-27 05:59

This is the ANC. This is how they work. Nothing will happen to her except perhaps she will pay the money back. But certainly, they are never held morally accountable for anything. And the masses keep on voting for them. Blind, or just incredibly thick?

  • stirrer.stirrer - 2012-11-26 17:28

Steal, steal, steal some more. When there is nothing left, let's tax the citizens to death so there's more we can steal. Theft is theft, why are these people not criminally charged and sent to JAIL?!!!!!

      daniel.jacobs.3766 - 2012-11-26 17:57

Because the president provides the example. Now you also know why they so desperately need him to serve another term. HE steals, so they are also entitled to it. Because he steals, they know he dare not reprimand them.

      lacrimose.wolf - 2012-11-26 21:21

Ethics and JZ do not mix. Ms Joemat-Pettersson will disappear from public life only to re-surface as a Diplomat in some foreign land - or the next minister of education. Everyone in JZ's Cabinet has a 'get-out-of-jail-free card'. It's part of the deal for getting him elected. Carte Blanche.

      nigel.burgess.334 - 2012-11-27 06:01

Because the ANC is not accountable for anything.

  • paul.coetzee1 - 2012-11-26 17:29

When you travel first class on the Gravy Train the Ethics Code is: "Full steam ahead and f#ck the poor."

      danita.renecle - 2012-11-26 18:53

more.pido just ignore Donkervlei, he does not have to reply in his 3rd fourth or fifth language! go to Politicsweb and type up this ministers name in the top right hand corner to see what she is busy destroying in fishing and farming. I agree with you. she aught to be fired on the spot.

  • - 2012-11-26 17:44

please explain, how can her 2 children, and the au pair (iow three people) incur costs of R151 878 for 3 flights/air tickets - one way? did they charter a private aircraft or what? unclear as to what actually happened N24 reporter

      cathy.vanvollenstee - 2012-11-26 18:24

First class all the way! They can affort it on our hard earned money!

  • dennis.crossman.9 - 2012-11-26 17:44

WTF, this woman should be fired, like all the other corrupt ministers, including the president. What will reprimand help. She couldn't even resolve the agriculture crisis in the Western Cape. Probably because she was busy squandering more tax money.

  • - 2012-11-26 17:48

This flea infested minister moeg- gamat should leave flying and rather take a Dog.

  • firmsly.kabelo - 2012-11-26 17:52

The minister should be relieved of her duties,if I steal at work I get fired.

      BulletProof. - 2012-11-26 18:12

This is fraud Jail her, what reprimend?

      nigel.burgess.334 - 2012-11-27 06:01

Exactly. But will this happen - No.

      SarelJBotha - 2012-11-27 12:35

She should be jailed for stealing R1 from each of 150000 people.

  • alexia.gambino - 2012-11-26 17:54

My goodness, do they even have a code of ethics! They certainly have no clue what it means. I wonder what is discussed at their social and ethics committee meetings. They probably skip ethics and concentrate on how they can best use the tax payers money for their social events.

      lacrimose.wolf - 2012-11-26 21:59

Correction, convicted fraudster and number-plateless hit-and-run artist, Tony Yengeni heads up the ANC political school - which, inter alia, teaches ethics ;) So when he's not killing da bull, he's being rewarded for talking it

  • rob.gunning.1 - 2012-11-26 17:57

All that might happen is that she has to pay back the original amount. She stole our money and she gets to stay in the same job?, she most likely will pilfer again but as long as she pays back what was taken when she gets caught, FIRE HER!!!!

  • braamc - 2012-11-26 17:57

Filthy thieving trash. No ethics, all a filthy breed. F you, your bunch of thieves

      mabula.mtsweti - 2012-11-26 18:15

Disgusting bastards! There must be some sort of gene in each and every ONE of cANCer and its supporters, that has a T gene in them. Is called the THIEVING gene!

  • dreyerc - 2012-11-26 17:57

Hahahahahaaaaaa, what is that, in the ANC? What a joke! It only exist in books, not something these lot know or understand and then they want the public to respect them, hihihihi....

  • eugene.muller.7 - 2012-11-26 18:10

Trash...f#ck the poor in other words.

  • ron.bilyard - 2012-11-26 18:10

    Another cANCer thief.

      sphe.ndlovu.50 - 2012-11-26 21:00

even if it was another ruling party these problems would still occur, I seriously think anyone who abuses tax payers money should be punished heavily. I am no rich person but R150000 for a one way flight seems like too much.

  • Montagnes.Bleues - 2012-11-26 18:10

Don't yet see any farmworkers bussed in and causing mayhem here or dead miners lying around either demanding their share of the loot. Why is that? Aha, they weren't instigated to account for their money being stolen by these few cadre 'absolutely no consequences' thieves ne?

  • alan.yates.18007 - 2012-11-26 18:32

I'm reminded of the ministers in the Apartheid government, not that they were this bad, but it used to be said the safest minister in the cabinet was he who the press had most recently called to be sacked.

  • alexcon85 - 2012-11-26 18:54

    Dishonourable discharge!

  • frank.hartry - 2012-11-26 18:58

This woman is as thick as two short planks. Watch what her reaction and replies will be. In my book she stole taxpayers money and therefore she should be charged and jailed. The ANC is running rampant with its stealing from the poor people of South Africa.

  • rob.tubbs.39 - 2012-11-26 18:59

    Corrupt - fire her arse.....

  • sharmay.thuynsma - 2012-11-26 18:59

So THATS why she was brown-nosing Zuma a while back...

  • tiaan.vanderberg.75 - 2012-11-26 19:13

Today we will read from the ANC Bible and more specifically from Corruption 12 verse 125.

      juan.prinsloo.750 - 2012-11-26 19:20

What does that read: Thy shall steal without consecuence

      themba.thwala.775 - 2012-11-26 21:34

Verse 126: "Thou must steal if you want to be promoted to cabinet or Luthuli House."

  • Mary Milne Archibald - 2012-11-26 19:15

It seems every day that we, the tax paying public, hear reports of how some public servant/ government official has defrauded the tax payer. It appears to be a competition as to who can spend the most and get away with it. So over this, No money for teachers, No money for upgrading schools, No money for nurses, No money for upgrading Hospitals, No money to upgrade roads, No money for any project related to helping the public. WHY you ask. The ruling party is busy using the money for themselves. ENOUGH ALREADY.

  • jan.kotze.7 - 2012-11-26 19:36

Sounds like 1st class tickets "op die koop toe" This is theft not fraud!!!

  • thabo.mapaila.5 - 2012-11-26 19:59

  • malcolm.stevens.129 - 2012-11-26 20:09

She has now qualified for level 3 of the gravy train game. Kaching.

  • themba.thwala.775 - 2012-11-26 20:15

Who will reprimand her when all the anc leaders are big spending thieves? The theft and misuse of public funds is what will qualify her for an even higher position in the ANC. Watch this space

  • altus.kirsten - 2012-11-26 20:48

...and she wants higher wages for farm workers, but waste R150,000 on a flight for three people. What a joke! I fly a lot and nothing more than R8,500 a pop to EU. She fly 5 times this rate. Cut minister expenses by 50% to pay for farm workers wages!

  • altus.kirsten - 2012-11-26 20:57

What was she doing overseas? She did not learn anything....

  • Michael Kleber - 2012-11-26 20:58

Can you imagine the reprimand from boss jacob , clears throat , pushes up glasses , you know we are here to serve the people and it is their money we are dealing with and must spend it wisely oh heh heh heh there is also that small issue of nkandla and we need the money for that , but your chance will come my renovations are almost complete then we will make a plan neh

  • carl.h.witte - 2012-11-26 21:54

  • paul.korb.9 - 2012-11-26 22:16

  • Paul - 2012-11-27 00:57

R 151878 on flights alone, but its ok as she did cut her holiday short !!!

  • andrew.mackie.90 - 2012-11-27 06:45

One of the most useless ministers in cabinet and it is only recommended a reprimand. She should be fired without delay. No reference is made to her costly stay at guest house during soccer world cup only the cost of expensive hotel stays while awaiting her official residence. Dont worry it is only taxpayer money. A further matter of leaving our fishing waters unprotected for months when handing this task over to our ill equipped Navy. Yet she is still a minister !!

  • SarelJBotha - 2012-11-27 12:32

No reprimand is enough. She should be fired as she effectively stole from 8 million tax payers.
