Pietermaritzburg - Expecting our brains to memorise volume of work during exam time or retain information it receives daily requires fuel and breakfast is the most important meal of the day for this, said dietician Sharon Hultzer.

Eating breakfast helps you not to get tired and also keeps your energy levels up. You do not need a heavy breakfast, a fruit and yogurt or boiled egg, even a glass of milk with a fruit will make a big difference.

“During exams times do not became so engrossed in studying that eating falls by the side-line. Skipping meals will cause blood sugar levels to drop, resulting in feeling tired and sluggish,” said Hultzer.

Eating healthy foods is not expensive, there are beans, sweet potatoes and many other vegetables that you can grow at home. Not only should pupils watch what they eat but it is also important to look after yourself.

Educational specialist Wayne Hugo said, “There are five very important rules that pupils should be following during this time —pace yourself, make notes, take breaks, do exercise during the breaks, and test yourself after each break.” Hugo said exercise floods the brain with blood and electrical impulses to recharge and balance it out. It also encourages you to drink more water and rehydrate.

“Never just re-read what you have studied and think that because you recognise it again, it will stick — making notes on the side is very important.”
