Food labelling laws could backfire

2012-03-15 08:38

Johannesburg - New food labelling laws could mean consumers are given less information about products, it was reported on Thursday.

The Daily Dispatch said labelling legislation was now so strict that it was cheaper for companies not to volunteer a breakdown of nutritional information.

Food scientist Nigel Sunley told the Eastern Cape newspaper that the nutritional aspect of the new food laws had “backfired”.

"The department of health didn’t think carefully about the implications of the wording," he said.

Dietician Jane Badham said the health minister had spoken about clamping down on the amount of salt in food but it was not mandatory to disclose how much salt was on food.

Any food packaging designed after March 1 will be designed to reflect the new regulations.

      daryltt - 2012-03-15 13:45

"...small thing. Is this..." (since we're correcting grammar here)

      andrejbrink - 2012-03-15 19:30

  • Moss - 2012-03-15 09:06

  • kseyffert - 2012-03-15 09:08

Typical of any government without an effective opposition. Poorly formulated laws that DO NOT ADDRESS THE ISSUES THEY WERE WRITTEN FOR!

      SNG62 - 2012-03-15 09:37

Time to vote them out of office!

      Gomo-Leide Banks Tshoke - 2012-03-15 11:00

Its a damn shame that we are living in this country. Most of those laws are formulated by people who are not even fully qualified to occupy certain positions. *sies*

      Gomo-Leide Banks Tshoke - 2012-03-15 11:03

I agree with you Kseyffert. its a disgrace..*sies*

      Food Forensics - 2012-03-15 12:26

hahah Ksey... The DA Party know full well what is happening as I have informed them and they have done NOTHING abt it for years. Whats that tell you??

      Food Forensics - 2012-03-15 12:29

@GOMO, you are so so right friend. But they will all be dealt with soon. Even the President has been advised and has kept a deathly silence for Months. Wait he and his cronies meets with CEO's of the MEGA Food and Beverage Companies often. Whats that tell you!

  • Sharon - 2012-03-15 09:10

We can all say that we are little mushrooms - Kept in the dark and fed ____ (the brown stuff)

      Food Forensics - 2012-03-15 12:36

Sharon, its because you are indoctrinated to believe what you are told to be the truth. How wrong this has been. Again you will be mortified and horrified as to what is occurring in the F&B Industry in the RSA for so many years. Allowed by the ANC Government for 18 years and YES allowed by the previous Governments as well.

  • WigzellRM - 2012-03-15 09:14

I do not trust my health to the department of health anyway so it doesn't matter.

      Food Forensics - 2012-03-15 12:25

Well done Wig. Could not have said it better myself. The DOH and DAFF and the rest have been a farcical dysfunctional institution for more years than can be guessed at

  • Teboho Mphaloane - 2012-03-15 09:29

    What new regulations?

      Food Forensics - 2012-03-15 12:23

Tabo, its called the R146 to be implemented at the end of the month...some farcical new food and beverage legislation by the DOH that will never be monitored, controlled or enforced. They same applies to the existing legislation's.

  • Aphrodite - 2012-03-15 09:31

Which is why I only eat fresh fruit, meat and veg. grow a lot of my own. Never eat processed crap anyway!!

      vattamarco - 2012-03-15 09:37

I think more of us should be doing this!

      Food Forensics - 2012-03-15 12:21

Aphrodite. There is NO such thing as FRESH anything. Anywhere in the world. If even if you grow it yourself in most instances. Simple Fact. And there IS NO approved FREE RANGE or ORGANIC Farming in the RSA. Please do not confuse the word certified free range and or organic on some product labels with the word APPROVED. There is very little comparison in most instances.

  • Jennifer - 2012-03-15 09:48

They can do nothing right! And it affects every SINGLE aspect of our lives. We can run, but we can't hide from this insiduous and ultimately at best inept, at worst destructive, interference in our lives. From not disciplining our children to what we eat to what we say ..... "Most in South Africa happy" Is this an early April Fool's joke?

      Food Forensics - 2012-03-15 12:17

Jennifer if only you knew what you were eating you will be horrified and mortified. There legislation's are more than farcical because they DO NOT, control, monitor and enforce them. No wonder the RSA is a sick and dying and dysfunctional nation!

  • paulgerber969 - 2012-03-15 09:56

LOOKING at petty things instead of HOSPITALS ECT!!!!!

      Food Forensics - 2012-03-15 12:14

hahah Paul, its the disgusting foods and beverages in the RSA that put people in hospital in most if not all cases. How does a Hospital treat and cure a person if they told lies and non truths as to what people have consumed?? And the Government allows this to happen and then says they got NO money to improve health care etc etc.

  • Martin - 2012-03-15 09:59

if its tasty i will eat it, i never read the packaging anyway

  • Andre - 2012-03-15 10:15

"Any food packaging designed after March 1 will be designed to reflect the new regulations". I sell Ice. I had to changed the printing template and the bags only for the customer to see that this product is made out of WATER!!!!! Now that's a bummer.

      Martin - 2012-03-15 10:18

      Food Forensics - 2012-03-15 12:08

And what chemical/s are you hiding in your "ice" to prolong its longevity? How pure is the water quality?? Best you read some existing legislation's regarding ice for human consumption sold commercially never mind the R146. So I guess it is a bummer for you!

  • Gomo-Leide Banks Tshoke - 2012-03-15 10:54

This country has problems...even in food labeling.*shocked*

      Food Forensics - 2012-03-15 12:10

GOMO, you will horrified and mortified if you only knew what you have consumed and will consume. Thanks to the RSA Government and their DON'T GIVE A DAMN ATTITUDE! No wonder the RSA is a sick and dying, dysfunctional country.

  • Food Forensics - 2012-03-15 11:18

The pending R146 Legislation is just as farcical as every other Food and Beverage Legislation the DOH have ever implemented. It is a cabal of so called "experts" that sit on many so called committee's such as FLAG, the Consumer Goods Council, Saffost and a host of others that decide what will be Legislated on. Most of these committee's are headed up or formed by the same so called Food and Beverage "experts" What is even more heinous and horrendous and immoral and unethical is that the DOH Directorate Food Control and other Governmental Departments such as DAFF and the DTI and the NCC continue stating they have: NO budgets, resources whether human or otherwise or equipment, etc to monitor, control and or enforce legislation's for more years than can be guessed at and this remains the status - quo as of today. No wonder the Government wants the information bill pushed through parliament so they can deny the unsuspecting customer and consumer the truth because of their incompetence's for so many years. Make that 18 yrs. Well surprise Mr Director Food Control and the Ministers Health and Agriculture and the rest of you EVIL corrupt devious, despicable, unethical and immoral persons. The day has dawned for the unsuspecting customer and consumer to know the whole truth and to prove to the Govt and all its cronies and the F&B Industry as a whole. Their foods and beverages and their lives and livelihoods will NO LONGER BE SO HORRENDOUSLY, HEINOUSLY AND DIRELY COMPROMISED.

      Food Forensics - 2012-03-15 11:50

There is NOT ONE Food or Beverage product I have ever complained about to the DOH or DAFF that has been tested and or verified them to be Compliant even with their own existing Legislation's not to mention the new R146. Their answers have always been they do not know and its up to the F&B Industries to self regulate etc etc. Then WHY have Legislation's in the first place?? Alas the Government are facing a rather large lawsuit it is about to be increased inline with the penalty that was imposed on a Bread producer by the Government which was one Billion Rands and they have NO WHERE to run or hide. Monies to be placed in the FSQA (Food Safety and Quality Assurance) of food and beverage products in South Africa so they may be improved in line with most first world countries that care and protect their citizens as best as possible. Which allows all citizens the legal and constitutional right to make their own educated and informed decisions as to what they will or will not consume. These Based on TRUTH and TRUST in what they read on Labels. Is it not true to state... that what one does unto others in the name of Financial Greed for the chosen "FEW". This may well come back to bite you in time. Again that time has arrived! No truer is the following Quote. If people let government decide what foods they eat and what medicines they take, their bodies will soon be in as sorry a state as are the souls of those who live under tyranny. ~Thomas Jefferson

  • del.pearson.98 - 2013-02-13 00:40

Why do you think so many unknown "viruses" are occurring in the human body with no medical explanation or cure. Most of what we eat is chemically enhanced even if we grow it ourselves. Fertilizers and pesticides are used irrespective of whether grown at home or on a farm. The processing plants need to be continually monitored. Money makes the world go round and short cuts are taken all the time. How can one believe what is on a label anyway. who is checking???
