Foreigners caught with 4 tons of gold

2013-01-30 22:23

Johannesburg - Four foreign nationals were arrested for possession of illegally mined precious metals in Roodepoort on Wednesday, said the Hawks.

Hawks spokesperson Paul Ramaloko said the four men were caught travelling in a truck carrying four tons of unwrought gold, earlier on Wednesday.

Another ton was found abandoned in an open veld.

The men were arrested after a sting-operation at the Durban Deep mine, along Main Reef Road in Roodepoort.

They would appear in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court on Friday.

Ramaloko said 29 other people were caught mining illegally in the same area and were all foreign nationals from Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Lesotho.

They were found with no documentation and would be handed over to home affairs officials, said Ramaloko.

Damn?! 4tons, these guys were in 4 early retirement

  • dave.kofang - 2013-01-31 01:32

We know they helped our people exiled in their countries but how long are we goin 2 b undermined because of that?We must deal with immigration decisively like the americans are busy doin.

      denis.gomo - 2013-01-31 13:37

At 4 tonnes....u gotta give these guys a break. Chances that they robbed to acquire it are slim. They probably mined it outside the country and smuggled it into SA to sell it at better prices. I can bet a rand that they were going to sell it to people linked to the mines who wanted to augment their production. Someone failed to raise the required amount to buy the look and ratted the guys to the police.

specifically mozambiques show no respect 4 us, they do s they please here, 1stly on sunday they killed our precious rhino n now they steal our gold!!! govt. ?

      Peter Zylstra - 2013-01-31 07:17

I agree with you but the problem is, what are we, citizens of SA, doing about the illegals in the country......nothing and that attitude must change!

  • smalahlela1 - 2013-01-31 05:19

trustworthy police dont wanna b rich in a corruptive country, fools.u weighd the truck 4ton,how many tons of that 1 abadoned in the veld?

      ronald.stilianou - 2013-01-31 10:40

      Really??, are you serious?

  • stephen.michaels.75641 - 2013-01-31 07:15

Four tons of gold?? These guys can mine give them jobs, those having jobs cant produce 1ton...

      denis.gomo - 2013-01-31 13:42

I agree with you 100%....it takes big mining companies with big machinery and huge plants to mine 4tonnes. How many tonnes did Harmony Gold produce last year? Yet these poor guys sweat it out artisanally in addition to buying from other artisanal miners to raise their loot. I say give these guys proper mining concessions, a 6 months crash course at a business school and let them do their thing. They are the real deal. Unless someone can prove that they killed or robbed to obtain the gold, I say let them off with the minimum sentence and give them guidance and support.

  • neiljvv - 2013-01-31 07:45

What is going to happen with this gold ?

  • enanjo - 2013-01-31 07:51

SA's annual gold production in 2011 was 197,9 tonnes. Was this load sent to support brother Mugabe? Where can common criminals get access to +-2% of our annual gold production?

  • trevor.gush.7 - 2013-01-31 08:04

think reporters might have made a mistake , most probably going containing ore

      seanrossouwslr - 2013-01-31 09:48

Unwrought gold might not be very pure but is still already cast in bars. It 's not usually industrial grade, but its been removed from ore or scraps already.

  • jp.leroux.33 - 2013-01-31 08:14

If we start seeing gold trimming on all of Zoomers buildings in his new palace we know where the 4 tons of gold is being kept "safe"

  • philip.horwood - 2013-01-31 08:42

Again, reporting is very bad. It was not 4 tons of gold (get real), rather it was "concentrate" (gold bearing mud), which would run at anything from 50 to 1000g/ton.

      hildegard.cilliers - 2013-01-31 10:33

Yeah, was wondering about that myself! Thanks for clarifying..

      denis.gomo - 2013-01-31 13:46

Thats more like it because 4 tonnes of gold is not a joke - who'd have that amount of gold? You'd need an army for security. Four tonnes of gold bearing ore or concentrates is believable.

  • will.macquire.9 - 2013-01-31 08:57

I have never seen a country so easily penetrable and disrespected by foreigners before. Its like a free for all country because of lax immigration controls. This foreigner situation is a direct danger to all citizens as we keep seeing their crimes here.

  • will.macquire.9 - 2013-01-31 09:00

This foreigners are a ticking time bomb and a definate threat to the furure stability of this country regardless of who the government of the day is. A stitch in time saves nine,we see already what they are doing to our country.

  • malcolm.stevens.129 - 2013-01-31 09:30

I really doubt they had 4 tons of gold. Perhaps 4 tons of ore.

      andrew.selous - 2013-01-31 10:02

      @malcolm,either or,its still a lot.

  • nozimbali.mtshali - 2013-01-31 09:31

The big question here is " Where is the Gold now"???? How can a mine run illegally and produce over 4 tons of gold without the goverment knowing.... something just doesn't add up! Like it or not, but having foreign countries come in and go as they please will ruin this country.... if you don't like this comment... Read it again in 10 years.... you'll understand.

  • jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2013-01-31 09:55

Handed over to Home Affairs?. Shouldn't they be in prison?.

  • ashley.keung1 - 2013-01-31 10:26

I seriously doubt they had 4 tons of mined gold has to be Ore; you need to mine approx. 6 tons of ore to produce 1 ounce. There are 32000 Ounces in one ton. It means they had the capability to go through 960 000 tons of ore. I find that impossible.

  • HJS - 2013-01-31 10:32

FOUR TONS? or is that an error? 4 Tons is one helluva lot of gold. How long would it take to "mine" how much ore and refine it to produce that amount of gold? Must be one very BIG operation behind that?

  • robin.stubbs.37 - 2013-01-31 13:07

4 tons is almost beyond belief. It represents a significant percentage of any mine's production. There must be massive collusion to steal 4 tons of gold bars!!

  • Peter - 2013-01-31 13:40

Nonsense its 4 tons of low grade gold ore

  • mantlekilo - 2013-01-31 14:23

The message being sent out to the dregs of society in this world is....'Welcome to South Africa...make yourself at home...help yourself to whatever takes your fancy, our women, our children, our treasures, our heritage and our peace. Be assured that whatever you do to or with us, you will never take our 'freedom'. As a country we are really quite backward in dealing with these challenges that threaten our very existance. As the famous 'Green Leader' story goes, an incoming foreign airline pilot once asked of the Lusaka Air Traffic Controller.....'who is in control down there ?'. Sadly crime syndicates in South Africa appear to be running the vshow at this juncture.

The state needs to regulate the influx of foreigners in our country. Recent spate of gruesome business/house-robberies points to them cause you can't have millions of unregistered and aren't finger printed destitute people roaming the streets!
