Cape Town - An ex-Parow police officer found guilty of fraud after using a state vehicle without authorisation has been ordered to pay for the damages caused to the car after she was involved in an accident more than a year ago.

Mabel Matshidiso Segoete, 34, was also handed a suspended sentence in the Bellville Regional Court, police spokesperson Colonel Tembinkosi Kinana confirmed.

The former detective constable was involved in an accident at the corner of Marula and Mphandle streets in Wallacedene, Kraaifontein, on May 31 2014.

“According to the reports, the constable was on a rest day when she used the state vehicle without the authority or permission from her superiors.

“The vehicle was badly damaged and instead of following the correct procedures to report the incident, the constable repaired [the vehicle] and had [it] sprayed so that dents and scratches from the accident could not be recognised.”

The damage was discovered during a routine vehicle inspection.

“When questioned, she attempted to cover up by claiming she had driven into a rock,” Kinana said.

She resigned from the force in January this year before an internal disciplinary hearing could be finalised, Kinana said.

He said a criminal case was also opened against her.

She has further been ordered to pay just over R33 000 for the damage, said Kinana.
