Johannesburg - A former police captain was shot dead and his wife and son were assaulted when robbers broke into their home in Linden, Johannesburg, Netwerk24 reported on Wednesday.

Andre Fabricius, 50, died at about 03:00 on Tuesday morning after he was shot in the chest.

According to the report, three armed men broke into the house through a window. Fabricius woke after hearing a noise and was fatally shot when he went to investigate, Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale said.

Fabricius's mother-in-law, Koeks de Kock, who lives on the property, said her daughter, Rista, phoned her between 03:30 and 03:45 to ask for help.

According to De Kock, Rista and her 13-year-old son Dario had been tied up by the robbers and assaulted with a firearm. The men took money, a cellphone, tablet and a laptop.

The family were consoled by friends, family and old police colleagues, with one of Fabricius’s former colleagues describing him as “dynamite”.

Fabricius was one of the investigating officers in the murder case of Hester Rawstorne who was killed in 2003, along with her 24-year-old step-daughter and grandchild in Sunnyside, Pretoria.
