Johannesburg - Four houses, including those of two local politicians, were petrol-bombed in Richmond near Pietermaritzburg, the KwaZulu-Natal community safety department said on Thursday.

The houses of municipal speaker Thulani Shabalala and councillor Douglas Kunene were bombed on Monday morning, spokesperson Kwanele Ncalane said.

Their cars were also damaged.

Community safety MEC Willies Mchunu said the attacks could be linked to service delivery.

"If people are not happy with the service delivery, we have channels that are normally followed where people voice out their concerns.

"Public representatives should be respected as they were democratically elected to their positions. Most of the time when we are approaching elections, we face such incidents. In that way we are convinced that these incidents are politically-related," he said.

Police Colonel Jay Naicker said five people had been arrested in connection with the attacks.

"They will appear in the Richmond Magistrate's Court on Monday."

Police expected to make more arrests.
