Cops suspended over heist mastermind's escape

2011-08-18 21:45

Johannesburg - Four police officers were suspended in connection with the escape of one of South Africa's most wanted criminals, Bongani Moyo, Gauteng police said on Thursday.

Two investigating officers and two policemen were suspended from duties at the Pretoria Regional Court, Brigadier Neville Malila said.

Moyo, who has allegedly been linked to more than 30 bank robberies, escaped from the court last Wednesday.

In March, the 29-year-old escaped from Boksburg Prison.

He was on crutches at the time of his court escape, not locked in a cell or wearing shackles. He had been sitting between courts 16 and 17 and escaped through court 16.

Suspended? They should be thrown into jail for aiding and abetting a criminal. Their pensions should be liquidated and all their assets confiscated too. Let them feel what it's like to be stolen from.

      Coquine - 2011-08-18 22:01

Where does it say they are suspended on full pay?

      Netherlands - 2011-08-19 07:04

To be BRUTALLY HONEST..... WHY AM I NOT SURPRISED?????????? THis is the sort of INCIDENTS South Africa has become familiar with.... LOOK WHO IS LEADING THE BUNCH OF MORONS!!!! Bheki Cele(bi).... as CROOKED AS THEY MAKE THEM!!!!!!!

      gksa - 2011-08-19 08:04

@Coquine - "On full pay" is the only legal way to suspend someone in SA, I think. Fair enough, but all the more reason not to let these inquiries drag on for as long as they do. In the private sector, such inquiries are usually done & dusted before the week is out, otherwise it costs you a fortune.

      Barry - 2011-08-19 13:00

He should be hailed as a National Hero for making a mockery out of an already mocked system.

      Barry - 2011-08-19 13:03

But that is lekker for Moyo. Now He can enjoy His hard earned booty and at least the monies will come back into the economy.

  • HadEnuf - 2011-08-18 22:01

"Spended" - WTF ? Well done News24, demonstrating your illiteracy once more . . .

      Grant - 2011-08-18 22:15

Is this a freudian slip...that Moyo considers it money well 'spended' for the cops to look the other way?

  • Al Chemist - 2011-08-18 22:03

    I'm spended all my monies

  • Tyrant - 2011-08-18 22:05

      MarkL - 2011-08-18 22:38

it's obscure fine print, can't blame them for missing it :)

      AloninSA - 2011-08-18 23:15

Get your news elsewhere dude... If you don't like News24 stop driving their traffic, and further than that their user interaction with your deconstructive(well not entirely I guess) comments.

      Met - 2011-08-19 05:50

  • Misan Thrope - 2011-08-18 22:09

After reading the headline, I just knew the comments were going to be humorous. I wasn't disappointed. Possibly the proof-reader needs to spended some more time at school.

      Gungets Tuft - 2011-08-18 23:13

Proof reader needs to be ... SUSPended .. by his feet ...

      Met - 2011-08-19 05:53

  • Oopkopdenker - 2011-08-18 22:30

Nice one on the grammar again Naspers. What on earth does "spended" mean? Guess I need to go back to school and relearn English, or wait, maybe you guys can give me a free crash course!

      Barry - 2011-08-19 13:05

@ Oopkopdenker You mean cash course.....but then you will be spended.

  • ElKapino - 2011-08-18 22:39

    F7 before u upload

  • stefan.coetzer - 2011-08-18 22:57

Shouldn't the headline be: Cops suspended over heist master's escape and not Cops spended over heist master's escape ?

  • DjangoFat - 2011-08-18 23:06

Its really sad that the cops who are meant to be protecting the public is protecting the criminals. It just goes to show how morality is degenerating in Africa.

  • Andrew - 2011-08-18 23:06

i think news24 suspects that they've been suspended,so for now they're spended(is it now also safe to say there's no master in the right way of writing?LOL and MORE

  • Asmal_Kuhn - 2011-08-18 23:40

      Barry - 2011-08-19 13:07

@ Oopkopdenker The Editor must be spent.

  • Counter-spin - 2011-08-19 01:10

Look guys....if the spelling and grammer on this site is so offensive to you, then find another news outlet. After all, this is one is free, if you want perfect spelling and grammer then buy a newspaper, then you would have more justification for spewing out your troll speech nazi bs.

      Gungets Tuft - 2011-08-19 06:38

This is what they do, and it's not hard to look at the headline just once to check. They make money out of it and should do it properly. Just because the work I do provides a free service for you does not mean that I should treat it offhandedly. It's called pride in your work and pride in yourself. Standards boyo, standards.

      Gungets Tuft - 2011-08-19 06:39

Oh, and most printed newspapers are just as bad. Try and read a newspaper - just one page - without typos and spelling errors.

      daaivark - 2011-08-19 07:03

Oh come on Counter-spin, get some sense of humour. This is a media outlet using words as it's primary vehicle. It is not unreasonable to expect the purveyors therefore to use those words properly. So we send them up. ANd given that some time back (before Media24 became the monster it is today) Die Burger had one of the finest language bureaus in the country, the current state of affairs is sad. So deal with our gentle ribbing, okay.

      gksa - 2011-08-19 08:12

And let's not forget that they are making money out of the ads, which they wouldn't get if it weren't for our traffic, so it's actually perfectly legitimate to expect quality content.

      Nunya - 2011-08-19 08:23

      Counter-spin works for news 24 as a spell checker....methinks

  • Carl - 2011-08-19 01:51

As usual, fools undoing the hard work of the real heroes in the police. Saps just keeps on pissing into the wind.

      Amukelani - 2011-08-19 05:43

Sad indeed, our police do arrest and then wardens, judges.. (what ever they are called)...nonsense! And now police should search for him again and risking their lives!

      Andre - 2011-08-19 06:31

It's not about risking their lifes, it's about wasting taxpayers money.

  • lerato sekati - 2011-08-19 02:23

i guess i should be working for news24 because i didnt notice the error until I read the comments... I'll "spended" all their money.

  • Golden - 2011-08-19 02:48

Sorry, but the Baas forgot to tell me. You see it is his fault not mine you idiots :-)

      daaivark - 2011-08-19 07:04

  • Northern Stormer - 2011-08-19 07:00

One would think gross negligence will be punished with a summary dismissal is is the case and the norm in any business !!! Told you it was an inside job because it had all the elements of an inside job attached to it. Now also put them in shackles and parade them to the public as was the case with the Boeremag escapees !!!!

  • dotty_01 - 2011-08-19 07:00

why do brown people insist on confirming the theory that they are unequal? why?

      daaivark - 2011-08-19 07:05

Dotty, go away. You make me ashamed of being white.

      Face - 2011-08-19 07:48

Dotty, you definitely slammed daaivark on his soft spot!

      dotty_01 - 2011-08-19 10:46

daaivark, if they are equal, then what prompts them to behave like they do? and i will not accept that this is caused by apartheid, white racism etc..... they are creating this mess entirely on their own. why do you think that they never amount to much? why do you think that africa is in such dire straits? why are african 'natives' always the worst hit by unemployment, domestic violence, poor education? WHY WHY WHY? it does not matter which country you look at - there is a common thread. i admire your optimism btw! but i suppose being your age, you have to make the most of the situation..... and please dont be ashamed on my behalf! remember one thing - i am more than happy to change my opinion on the situation - i just need good enough reasons to revise my outlook....

  • Dead Skunk - 2011-08-19 07:07

The police were to busy bonking each other to bother to guard the prisoner...

  • Janice - 2011-08-19 07:12

Welcome to South all I can say!!!

  • Brent - 2011-08-19 07:28

HANG theses corrupt cops as an example. Yeah right, suspended on full pay and a lekker payment from the scum they let escape. We are going backwards people. Then the police want us to respect them.

  • jen - 2011-08-19 07:33

Don't suspend, fire them as they are a danger to society. If they were working for any private firm, they would have been fired on the spot and escorted from their desk by security guards. Gosh!

  • Trader1 - 2011-08-19 07:58

An investigating officer don't have any obligation towards the custody of an prisoner when it is delivered by Correctional Services at the courts! Correctional Services should be held solely resposible and the head of correctional services and the Minister involved should be fired!I hope the investigating officers sue the Police for Millions for unjust suspension! Its time that the powers to be take resposibility for who they appoint! How is it possible that the Ministers an so on is never to blame for the inadequasy of their departments!

  • warshrike - 2011-08-19 08:57

I don't know. Arrested/Suspected/involved/corrupt cops get almost as much attention as criminals. I guess there is not much difference anyway. The safety and security minister's wife charged with drug dealing; this and that cop involved in smuggling, that cop involved in a heist, bribery, scr3w'ng on duty, blackmail, extortion, murder. If not this, then arriving 1-2 hours late afrer receiving emergency calls. There is no shame in this corrupt govenment. But hey - keep voting them in... The moral slide continues; the chaos increases; criminality overwhelming. What can really be said of this laughable government?

  • Lvovo - 2011-08-19 09:00

"he was on crutches" was definitely a inside job............oh where is SA going?..............

  • Blaque4sho - 2011-08-19 10:14

@dotty 01, actually contrary to what you believe, blacks don't hate white, we just hate the ones that are racist like you. I like daaivark, I think his opinions are very objective and not biased, he is one of the few whites we have in this country who are not racist, he loves South Africa and is not sitting back and watching it fail like most of you instead he adds valuable input which can assist in healing this country. @Daaivark do not be discouraged by some bitter people who are so self righteous that they are not even willing to listen to anything non white, whether good or bad. shame on you Dotty and your fans.

      dotty_01 - 2011-08-19 10:50

blackie, no i dont hate ALL black people. just the ones that are stupid and violent, and corrupt and destructive and murderous and lazy. oh dear, i think this is the same thing. oh never mind....

      Eddie - 2011-11-08 17:27

Have you ever considered that Dotty maybe going through the same phase as some so-called darker skinned people and trying to hide the fact that she is just as stupid-people like this normally try to get the attention away from their own inadequacies by critizing others!

  • AllHoliday - 2011-08-29 09:03

It started with "loosing" it's loosing criminals! What a joke! Real criminals can "sit" (aparently ungaurded) between courts.

  • FreeorDom - 2011-09-22 08:14

Mmmm... what's the difference between Moyo and our corrupt officials?? Is there a difference??
