Johannesburg - Two adults and a baby, about a year old, were killed in a head-on collision in Dendron road, about 50km outside Polokwane on Wednesday, paramedics said.

"Paramedics arrived on scene and found two bakkies, severely damaged, still attached to each other. There was a lot of oil spillage and vehicle parts on the road," ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing said.

"A woman and man, believed to be in their 20s, and the baby, in a Toyota Hilux bakkie, were declared dead on the scene. The man and baby were at the back of the bakkie while the woman was a passenger in the vehicle."

Bodasing said they sustained multiple injuries while six men in the same vehicle sustained moderate injuries.

A woman and man in the other bakkie were in a critical condition.

The people were treated on the scene and transported to nearby hospitals.

The cause of the accident was not known.

In another crash in the province, a man died and three people were injured in a pile-up in Polokwane.

Paramedics arrived on the scene and found two cars on the side of the road and a taxi rammed against a tree, said Bodasing.

"The driver of one car, believed to be in his 30's, was declared dead on the scene due to his multiple injuries. The passenger in the vehicle was found in a critical condition."

The taxi driver was also injured. One person in the third vehicle sustained minor injuries, Bodasing said.

The injured were transferred to hospital for treatment.
