Durban - Four people were killed when a bakkie left the R66 near Ulundi and rolled down an embankment on Monday.

KZN EMS spokesperson Robert McKenzie said three people had died at the scene, with a fourth succumbing later at a nearby hospital.

The emergency call was received shortly before noon for a crash involving a bakkie on the R66 near the Mayiwane intersection.

"Paramedics found the bakkie had left the road and overturned down a small bushy embankment. They worked frantically to treat the 10 surviving patients, two of whom are children. Three of the patients were critically injured, while seven others had sustained injuries which are serious in nature," he said.

All were transported to hospital for continued medical care.

The exact cause of the crash was not yet known.
