Four men arrested for illegal firearms

Johannesburg - Four men were arrested in separate incidents on Wednesday for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, East London police said.

"The arrests came as a surprise as the men were not expecting the police to pounce down on them," Captain Stephen Marais said.

"One of the men was found at his house dancing with a firearm on his waist."

Police arrested him when they found that the photograph and identity number on the firearm licence were not his.

In another incident, police gave chase when two men started running away when they spotted the police in the grounds of the high school in Needs Camp.

"Police recovered their firearm in the bushes," Marais said.

One of the men was charged with handing his firearm to a person with no licence.

The other three, aged between 19 and 58, would appear in the East London Magistrate's Court on Friday.
