Cape Town - The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) recommended on Thursday that four women be appointed as judges of the High Courts in Johannesburg and Pretoria.

The JSC, which has in recent years come under fire for the slow pace of gender transformation on the Bench, named six candidates it would recommend to President Jacob Zuma for appointment.

Most of the nine candidates interviewed were women.

"Four vacancies were advertised, but the judge president advised the JSC that there are in fact currently six vacancies, and hence the JSC decided... to fill those six vacancies," said JSC spokesperson CP Fourie.

The six candidates were: acting Judge Wendy Hughes, Nomsa Khumalo, Brian Mashile, Daisy Molefe, Leonie Windell, and advocate Gregory Wright.

The JSC said Mashile was the only "candidate who is disabled in that he is blind".

Competition Appeals Court Judge President Dennis Davis is also likely to be re-appointed for a second term after a JSC recommendation, also on Thursday.

Davis was the only candidate interviewed for the position during interviews this week.
