Polokwane - Limpopo police are searching for four men who escaped from custody as they were about to appear in court in Modjadiskloof, near Tzaneen.

Lieutenant Colonel Moastshe Ngoepe said the four escaped from the Modjadiskloof Periodical Court building on Wednesday.

Clement Chidambu, Alex Makwavabula, Noande Shibanda and Herbert Kukwiwiwi were all illegal immigrants from Zimbabwe. They were aged between 26 and 43.

The four were going to be deported, if it was found that they were not linked to any other crimes.

"However that process was on-going [when they escaped]," Ngoepe said.

It was unclear how the four managed to get free.

"An internal investigation is on-going and is running parallel to the criminal case of escaping," he said.

"The manhunt is still on. We are asking the public to assist us until we apprehend the four."
