Johannesburg - Four suspected illegal miners were arrested at Grootvlei mine in Springs after an alleged shoot-out between them and law enforcement, Ekurhuleni metro police said on Tuesday.

Metro police received reports of heavy gunfire at the mine early on Monday morning, spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago said in a statement.

When police arrived on the scene at 06:00, the clashing groups redirected their gunfire towards them.

No one was injured.

"Due to the treacherous terrain of the area, police had to summon reinforcements in the form of a chopper and specialised... members from the K9 and Equestrian units," Kgasago said.

"After a five-hour search, four male suspects were apprehended. A .38 special revolver with 20 live rounds and a knife were confiscated from one of the suspects. Initially, two men were arrested and a further search of the area led to two more suspects... [being] apprehended."

The four men from Lesotho, aged between 24 and 28, were charged at the Springs police station for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

They are expected to appear in the Springs Magistrate's Court this week.
