Johannesburg - A four-year-old boy died while three others were injured, one critically so, in an accident on the R55 in Olievenhoutbos on Tuesday evening, paramedics said.

"Netcare 911 paramedics arrived at the scene and after triaging the injured, found that the four-year-old boy died before our arrival, the mother was critically injured while two other patients sustained serious injuries," Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said.

"After the injured were stabilised at the scene by paramedics, they airlifted the critically wounded female with the Netcare helicopter to a specialised facility while the other patients were transported by ambulance to various hospitals for the care that they required."

The cause of the accident, where it appeared two cars collided at the intersection of the R55 and Waterberg Road, was unknown.
