Fraudulent licences must end - minister

2012-07-09 16:02

Pretoria - The issuing of fraudulent driver's licences must be brought to a stop, Transport Minister Ben Martins said on Monday.

"We need to ensure that there isn't corruption with regard to the issuing of driver's licences," he said in Pretoria.

"Unfortunately, the horrors, the facts, of fraudulent licences are to be seen on our roads."

This was a problem that should be tackled together by the provinces and the national government.

"Some of the authority that comes with the spheres of governments are entrenched in the Constitution -- we have to look at all those issues."

Martins said fraudulent licences would remain a problem for some time, but the department was working on it.

"It's not an issue that we can say we will eliminate in six months, but it's an issue that we have to give the requisite attention."

Martins told the Southern African Transport Conference that a reliable and efficient transport system was essential to the functioning of society.

"It has great influence and bearing on the location and range of economic and leisure activities. It influences the mobility of people. In some, it influences the quality of life..."

Martins said the transport sector should contribute to socio-economic development.

Investment in infrastructure should leave behind more than power stations, railway lines, dams, and roads.

"It must in necessity lead to heightened industrialisation in order to generate skills and boost job creation."

The minister said state-owned companies and entities were contributing to infrastructure development.

The conference would also discuss transport for rural development, urban transport policy and planning, safety and security, rail transport, and road construction.

A set of recommendations and findings would be put together after the conference and presented to the transport department.

      Lacrimose - 2012-07-09 18:42

We ALL know this. No more cure soundbites. Please tell us what you're going to do, when it will start/be done and how it will be done. - 2012-07-09 20:24

As long as black guys are issuing these licences it won't stop, you can bribe them with 50 cents man. It's all about the money, money, money. Fraud and corruption cannot stop with these guys in charge. That's the way it is sorry i know many readers aren't gonna like this comment, but we read about it on the news everyday, very sad indeed. How the hell do you build a nation with these type of corner stones?

      sheda.habib - 2012-07-09 20:41

Corruption starts at the top. Incompetent people are easy to bribe. Cry the beloved country....

      bernpm - 2012-07-10 00:16

it should not have started in the first place.....

  • ambauli - 2012-07-09 16:20

Viva! Now that this has been said I'm sure licence fraud will stop. Next speech will detail how water is wet and rocks are hard.

  • deabreu - 2012-07-09 16:22

Hint where to look for fakes: 1) taxis 2) government

  • busisiwe.kubeka1 - 2012-07-09 16:23

I know many DA trolls who are using fraudulent licences same like drugs

      peter.mansfield.395 - 2012-07-09 16:50

Please name them. They should be outed, just like the ANC ones.

      Sydney - 2012-07-09 16:57

Come on Busisiwe, name those you "know", or did you lie to us. I dare you!

      Billy - 2012-07-09 16:57

da trolls? didnt know you need a drivers license to use the internet

  • WitWolf - 2012-07-09 16:26

No S Sherlock.... About a year ago this one guy I knew paid R3000.00 to acquire a license. From learners to drivers. I had a foreign license at the time and passed mine legally for under a R1000.00 legally... And that included failing the drivers the first time. And how many people paid for their illegal licenses? A lot it seems like! Too many deaths on the roads due to incompetent and reckless drivers....

      andre.vandeventer.16 - 2012-07-09 17:12

Witwolf, it is your duty to report this to the authorities. If you don't you will be just as much to blame. Just do it!

  • thebe.tau - 2012-07-09 16:26

\The issuing of fraudulent driver's licences must be brought to a stop\ oh, so they have reached an issuing deadline.

  • BigChiefPlumbPudding - 2012-07-09 16:31

Another profound statement (not). What the hell are you going to do about it?

  • tony.langley.399 - 2012-07-09 16:43

One visit to a licencing centre will show you where the corruption is - without paying you can't even get an appointment.

  • faizieishlah.shabalala - 2012-07-09 16:45

Facilitation fees of up to R3000 are paid every day at testing centres in Gauteng. How do I know because my friends all paid and passed

      Sydney - 2012-07-09 16:59

If you do not blow the whistle on them and the corrupt officials, you are just as big a criminal as they are. Get a backbone and help to stop the corruption. If you refuse to help, you are a coward and a criminal.

  • maseratifittipaldi - 2012-07-09 16:55

"Fraudulent licences must end - minister" Our ministers are experts at stating the obvious. It is almost as if they see themselves as commentators on their own jobs, in stead of actors within it.

  • foxiloxi - 2012-07-09 17:00

Well then why don't the ANC lead by example, if there is no corruption at the top, you will better be ale to control it further down the chain!!!!!! Common sense buddy!! However there is so much corruption at the top that it is difficult to see whether there are any honest ones amongst the ANC Cadres??!!!

  • Rodney - 2012-07-09 17:00

lmao , i think "Drivers License" for internet forum users would be hilarious ..

  • Paulnicomp - 2012-07-09 17:12

I do not believe that one can get a license without paying a bribe in SA no matter how you drive. Also actions speak loader than words so less yaw-yaw and more do-do will have a beneficial effect.

  • Clive - 2012-07-09 17:13

You tell us how you are going to stop this without having all road users retested.

  • Allan - 2012-07-09 17:15

Cadre deployment - what else do you expect Mr Minister?

  • jean.ridon - 2012-07-09 17:19

In Capetown it takes a few months to get a learner's date, and more than 6 to get a date for the driving test.... some people can't wait, so purchasing a fraudulent license is their only option to get a job. Provide more inspectors, and more dates, and the problem will be sorted out, at least a part of it

      horst.muller.7330 - 2012-07-09 18:52

Its not only in Cape Town, we have the problem all over. And I think this really is the problem. Licences are bought out of frustration with the slow system.

  • keith.ngobeni - 2012-07-09 17:21

Here in the United kingdom Nigerians are selling south African fake driving licences to people, and those people can go on to exchange those fake SA licences and get the genuine British ones from the DVLA.

  • rob.bayliss.94 - 2012-07-09 17:35

Instead of stating what is obvious to anyone with more than one functioning brain cell he should be telling us how he intends to take these non-drivers off the road and punish the people who have benefitted from the corruption.

  • Rory Neil Price - 2012-07-09 17:47

This must be the Apartheid Regimes fault, and an investigation must be carried out

  • susan.paul.330 - 2012-07-09 17:52

    okay.....this must stop

  • Erna - 2012-07-09 17:54

And you get a huge salary for stating the obvious. Some action please.

  • steven.m.armour - 2012-07-09 18:21

There's only 1 way to stop fraud in the govt.Fire the lot.

  • nerina.keet - 2012-07-09 18:31

When are they going to look at the fact that traffic departments 'fail' people who can drive? Traffic departments are making loads of money this way.

  • keith.murphy.9638 - 2012-07-09 19:03

How many Nigerians are working in your lisence department? Check them out with all their false south african ID and birth certificates me thats a south african cannot even get an ID !

  • Johan De Beer - 2012-07-09 19:30

The mopinister says that fraudulent licences must stop. That does it then. From today, mr minister, or should it stop from next week onwards? How about a summit to decide?

      Johan De Beer - 2012-07-09 19:51

      ...minister -sorry

  • Johan De Beer - 2012-07-09 19:32

    "... the requisite attention" Huh?

  • Gerald Jordaan - 2012-07-09 20:15

Is there a department in Government that is not corrupt ?? I have yet to hear of one!!

  • Vlad - 2012-07-10 06:53

Dear comentators. There up in Europe was small Republic of Georgia most corrupted in postUSSR territory.New President fired all officials in Police servise and country was without traffic cops for 2 month.New young ones came...He gave them good salaries and a lot more.If you try to bribe police officer in Georgia it menas 5yeears in prison guarantee for you.If he takes your money 5 years for him + confiscation. Now Georgia is a country without corruption.BTW it also invites boere farmers to farm.......just check the websites.Of course don't forget it is may not work in RSA
