Johannesburg - A 30-year-old Viljoenskroon police constable has been arrested for murder, the Independent Complaints Directorate said on Tuesday.

It is alleged that he killed a 24-year-old man suspected of robbing a spaza shop with four others, said ICD spokesperson Moses Dlamini.

Earlier this month, a shop in the Viljoenskroon area was robbed by five armed men.

They allegedly stole goods totalling R3 000 in value, including cigarettes and airtime, and stabbed a Pakistani man.

Police were alerted and searched the area for men fitting the description of the robbers.

They saw a group of men on a street corner who looked suspicious, and called the men over.

Three of the men ran away, and the constable gave chase, allegedly shooting a man in the abdomen.

The injured man died on arrival in hospital.

Dlamini said the constable was arrested on Monday, following an ICD investigation.

He will appear in the Viljoenskroon Periodical Court this week.
