Johannesburg – Free State police recovered R90 000 in counterfeit notes after the driver of a suspicious vehicle tossed the money while being chased by police.

On Tuesday, police failed to stop a red VW Golf in Oppenheimer Park, as the car sped off while they were attempting to pull it over, spokesperson Warrant Officer Malebo Khosana said.

The driver stopped on Tisha Vanga Road, got out with a bag, and ran. He outran a police officer, but not before throwing the bag away.

It contained R90 000 in counterfeit R200 notes.

Police managed to recover the bag and arrested the three female passengers, who were in the car.

The suspects, aged between 25 and 35, told police they knew nothing about the money or the driver.

The car was impounded and the three women would face charges of possession of counterfeit money.
