Free State farmer attacked, set alight

2012-04-12 10:00

Bloemfontein - A Free State farmer is recovering in a Vereeniging clinic after being attacked and set alight outside his farm gate near Heilbron, a newspaper reported on Thursday.

Christo Janse van Rensburg, 36, sustained second and third degree burns when two men threw a petrol bomb through his open bakkie window as he arrived home around 22:00 on Tuesday, Volksblad newspaper reported.

His wife Connie told the newspaper that when her husband jumped out of his car and rolled on the ground, his assailants attacked him with a metal pipe and tried to force him back into the burning vehicle.

When this failed, they tried to stab him, then poured more petrol over him and set him alight.

Van Rensburg stripped and ran 200 metres to his farmhouse for help.

"My husband fought very hard. When I heard him screaming, I switched the lights on and the attackers must have taken fright, because they fled," she said.

Ok something has to be done. I say we all stop paying tax until a police task team is appointed to stop this madness

      John - 2012-04-12 10:20

How are we going to get a police task team to combat this when our Ninja Turtle look-a-like appoint like likes of Selebi, Cele, and perhaps now Mdluli as S.A's top cops?

      philani.goba - 2012-04-12 10:35

then community task teams, it has unfortunately come to having each other's back. I have lost faith in this country..unfortunately I cant afford to emigrate.

      Nicholas - 2012-04-12 11:05

We can already see it Jack, look at the Western Cape and the rest of the country, and we are only a couple of years in.

      Peter - 2012-04-12 12:49

This sounds like revenge to me. When investigating, start with his former and current employees.

      Johnathon - 2012-04-13 00:39

Just imagine if a white man did this to a black man while he was driving home. Every minister in the country would visit him in hospital, and 200 000 toy toy at every court appearance. Incident would be news and TV highlight for months and months. This incident may get small mention in middle pages, and then be forgotten next day. Always bite the hand that feeds you. That is the way you grew up, and the attitude you will always keep close to your heart.

      Bloody animals!!!

      Clifford - 2012-04-13 10:39

If I was a farmer I would have an inner and outer perimeter. The inner perimeter would consist of 10 to 15 rottweilers. The outer perimeter would consist of between 10 000 or 20 000 MP18A Claymore mines or landmines. At each windows I would have a M249 SAW Light Machine Guns.In the mornings you remove the bodies and make a discrete dispose of them.

      Newsmonger - 2012-04-13 11:31

Good to see you up and kicking Christo!

      Rainbow - 2012-04-13 12:18

Wonder what these Ancyl thugs have been offered or willr recieve to commit these crimes. Whoever says these farm murders are not political or racist needs to dig their head out of the sand. This is a war on afrikaans farmers waged by the ANCYL and their racist , unenployed thugs/supporters that are rewarded by them. When they are done with the farmers private businesses will be targeted. when this is done minority as a whole will be targeted. This is the African way and is why Africa is in the state that it is.

      Gary - 2012-04-13 12:29

Agreed but if only we could do that, if you know how please share your knowledge.....

Genocide Alicia? The fact is that much more victims of crime are Black, What would be the term for this phenomenon?

      Drienie - 2012-04-13 12:43

Bluzulu, you are Indian, why are you stuck up the black mans ass? These are hate crimes because one incompetant TWAT sang the 'struggle song' for his poor and uneducated followers, and its them commiting these crimes!! I wish my worst enemy not what any of the boer victims went through, but someone like you needs a bit of an eye opener .. to be an innocent victim of the 'poor poor black man'. You have to wish that one day you could catch one of these "people" alone on the street and see if they have the same balls to do these things when they do not have a team with them, i think they would run very far very fast... Brave in numbers, cowards all the same!

      TaniaSandraSteyn - 2012-04-12 22:26

One 16yr old killed a farmer's wife yesterday. And stabbed her husband twice, before he was shot by the farmer.

  • Adil Smit - 2012-04-12 10:23

Can you imagine what these sort of individuals do to their own children, parents, partners if they're prepared to throw a petrol bomb at another human being. If you are unhappy with someone, what about talking to the person. If they've done something illegal, report them to the police. But I suppose you have to be an adult with respect for yourself and other's lives to do that.

  • Shirley - 2012-04-12 10:24

Then its said we are imagining the fact that farmers are being steadily targeted! Government must wake up!Farmers must start defending themselvews at all costs!

  • Bradley - 2012-04-12 10:33

our farmers don't learn, If you live on a farm or are a target. SAs farming community should invest in some predator drones...

      Massey - 2012-04-12 10:54

Ok Bradley, so what should they do????? Just give up their everything and run like cowards?? They don't have a 9-5 job like you that will carry them. They work 24/7. 10 times harder than you anyway. You didn't think that comment through. DO you have any idea what will happen if all the farmers just stop farming?? You will go hungry and the egonomy will take a huge tumble.

      Randomhero6661 - 2012-04-12 11:13

uh huh, massey you missed the point here... google predator drone

      Massey - 2012-04-12 11:21

That part I got, it's the "our farmers don't learn" part that got me up in arms.

      Bradley - 2012-04-12 11:26

Nee nee Massey jy het nie lekker gelees nie.. ok firstly, most of my childhood i grew up on a plot doing hard work, you think i don't know what it takes to run a farm especially a productive one...secondly im not saying run like cowards im saying the farmers must fight back buy guard dogs, guns(automatic if you can or shotgun) alarm systems etc..

      TaniaSandraSteyn - 2012-04-12 22:31

With money from where, Bradley? To produce a litre of milk costs more than the average Farmer gets for a litre. Electric fences around a farm at today' electricity costs? Get real, please.

      TaniaSandraSteyn - 2012-04-12 22:33

Guard dogs within your house parameter: but what happens when your lifestock is attacked? Which farmer will remain cosily at home? Armed with a shotgun against 6 people with submachine guns? Grrrr. Think a little more, buddy.

      Randomhero6661 - 2012-04-13 11:49

USA - has a +-9 trillion debt problem, but have an abundance of predator drones amongst other military equipment, and guard dogs can be shot at range, id rather have a dinosaur... i guess what im trying to say is that life is more valuable than paper money...

      Don - 2012-04-13 12:52

Wow Bradley, what a brave statement you have made from the safety of your security estate whilst eating food provided by these farmers who don't learn.......

      Bradley - 2012-04-13 14:16

“I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it”

      Bradley - 2012-04-13 14:18

Ai, like Randomhero says why don't they get a dinosaur to protect them, what i'm trying to say is, is it not better than to have some sort of self defense than to have nothing at all.

      Abisali - 2012-04-13 20:55

@taniasandrasteyn: why do you only have shotguns and not sub-machineguns like the attackers as you stated in your post? Please enlighten me ...

      bluzulu - 2012-04-13 13:52

Tania, I have hatred for NO persons however do have an issue with some of bias posts on this website. It seems the TRUTH is hard to swallow for some. I have been called derrogatory terms & threatened with torture by some. The fact that I have a different perspective does not culminate in hatred to a sector of Afropeans. I suggest you consider some soul searching to find PEACE in your heart.

Barbaric act and as a black youth I condemn this in the strongest form. In fact it embarrasses me and at the same time makes me angry. This does nothing but fuel the fires in already racially polarised nation. What I'd like to say to white people in general and white farmers in particular, is that we as black people are just as appalled by these acts of savagism.

      Trotse - 2012-04-12 11:10

and our government sit back, do nothing, police force are ineffectual and couldn't care less. What's next a vigilante approach and that's not what SA needs - but human nature will see tolerances pushed to the extreme. Wake up Zuma, your breadbasket is under attack or do you want to import all your staple crops, as this is closer than you think!!

  • Phalo - 2012-04-12 11:00

Ag sies man, this is so plain wrong and downright stupid. People really have lost compassion and regard for life. Farmers feed the nation, you kill innocent farmers, you starve the nation. all people, black and white benefit from the products and services rendered by farmers. Please can someone help defend these precious people! What a useless government we have, we can't be killing farmers at this day and age. Can't they set up an awareness program on the importance of farmers, mobile police units in the farm areas to respond ( reactionay measure though) to distress calls from farmers, instead of harassing Zimbabweans and motorists on the country's highways?

  • desertratbkf - 2012-04-12 11:00

  • desertratbkf - 2012-04-12 11:05

Watching the opening of parliament is always a delight for me! Half of them cant even get out of their cars. Thanks to the food they guzzle, that the farmers are providing!

Its mind boggling how tolerant the whites for that matter and specifically the afrikaners and farmers have become on the atrocities committed against them .Are we really that lame ,scared or to civilized to say "TE MOER" we won't stand for this any longer . We should not be afraid of anything and take up the challenge to get a so to say malfunctioning government who lacks direction in most departments to stop this carnage and antagonism towards the very people who put in place a structured infrastructure found nowhere in the rest of Africa which is now fast becoming a ruin.

      Jacqui - 2012-04-13 11:24

I agree, where is the Afrikaner spirit?. Let the farmers say stuff you to the government, bring their milk, vegetables etc, to the poor and stop delivering it to the markets, where they are already short changed at every corner. do that for a week, or a month if need be and let's see what happnes then. The problem here is the government is never challenged and they have never faced a real crisis yet. So give them a damn crisis and let's see how they handle that. We have the power, let's use it.

  • Mavhungu Vincent - 2012-04-12 11:09

The best way to fight this attacks to both blacks and whites is to label them a crime than calling them racial descrimination, both blacks and whites are the victims of this attacks. Lets stand up and fight crime together we can do it. *spirint of ubuntu rise*

  • Chumscrubber1 - 2012-04-12 11:32

I fear another Wit Wolf or Skeirlik situation is coming soon. Its sad that innocent people are targetted in these responses, but angry people cannot think logically. "Oom Kriel" is just baiting all of you and you are taking it - hook, line and sinker!!! I'm pretty sure that regardless of what colour we are, there are those of us who are repulsed by these crimes, and I see that we are all continuously trying to justify ourselves and our colour. We will always be "tarred with the same brush" as the perpetrator. It's a simple fact of life. As "white" people we presume all black people hate us and vice versa, when in reality we know this is not true. We are not all the same! I wish the farmer a speedy recovery as these attacks are senseless and brutal and happen throughout Africa. As for a solution - I don't have one!

Humans can reason animals can't. Look at Africa the strongest rule. It was always like that in the animal kingdom. You might be able to domesticate it but to civilize,no. You get them in all races but the ratio between good and bad differs vastly in the different groups.

  • veritas.odium.paret - 2012-04-12 11:35

These farm attacks are starting to seem more like acts of terrorism and large-scale sabotage rather than just crimes. And if nothing drastic is done, these terrorists will starve the entire country by driving away the remaining productive farmers. We're dealing with an internal enemy of the state here and they're hellbent on sabotaging the country at large.

      TaniaSandraSteyn - 2012-04-12 23:15

Jabu, do you read the Sunday Times? Dr Buthelezi explained about the rinderpest amongst cattle in the 1890's. So many animals died, and the people of SA (Black and White) had no choice but to move to the cities and mines, or let their families starve. Pretty much like everywhere in the World when disaster strikes. When the Gov in 1913 expropriated land, no one was living there. Who do you blame: the opportunists, or the disease?

      Michael - 2012-04-13 08:02

You make a real moronic statement. Just think about what you have posted and then delete it - moron!

Don - 2012-04-13 14:25 which country do you live?? The government has effectively removed firearms through the Firearms Control Act and in the case that you do use one to protect your life, the process of proving yourself innocent and justified in using it in self defence is beyond absurd

  • Bradley - 2012-04-12 12:13

Its dangerous out take one of these....

  • Carla - 2012-04-12 13:53

Absolutely horrific!!! Is it not enough to drag him out of the vehicle and take the car?? Why the beating and attempted murder??? In cases like this, it doesn't surprise me that people perceive it as a racial attack.

  • Mart - 2012-04-12 14:25

Trespassers are a definite threat to your life. Laws and by-laws must be changed to empower legal landowners and tenants to treat trespassers as a distinct and defined threat with a legal appropriate and forceful reaction by those being threatened.

      ArchAngel - 2012-04-12 19:40

You need legislation that mirrors the Castle Doctrine... watch the crime stats PLUMMET!

      TaniaSandraSteyn - 2012-04-12 23:17

      Explain the Castle Doctrine, Arch?

      ArchAngel - 2012-04-13 00:21

@taniaSandraSteyn: basically an environment where you are protected from prosecution if you pop goblins on your own property. A Man's home is his castle, so somebody comes into your castle uninvited you can feed him to the puppies without fear of legal problems. Some goblins come visiting and somehow walk into an area wired with 1000 Volts @ 5 Amps .... KFC time ... no worries ... Police should just pitch up with a refuse truck, remove crispy leftovers and mosey on back to their station to report some more bad guys down .. another one (or more) for the good guys. Or you have lots of ambush defense ... you think about it ... :) Makes me all warm and fuzzy! :)

  • Sazi - 2012-04-12 14:31

This is seruously saddening, even though I myself am a black person, I don't condone this at all. Why on earth are these things happening? Our farmers are being murdered, our rhinos are being slaughtered, we are paying heavy taxes and soon to pay toll roads. I really don't blame anyone wanting to leave this forsaken country. If its still a country at all.......

      TaniaSandraSteyn - 2012-04-12 23:27

Every time I read a comment like yours, I realise that South Africa has a future. I do not condone capricious murder of any kind - wherever it happens. The cruelty associated with farm murders are beyond words, as are the killings in our townships. It is time that we acknowledge that there is a certain type of person in our country who are capable of savagery as in the time of the Mau-Mau in Kenya. Unfortuantely I know of some who grew up as children in a farmer's household, and could still wield the axe. Sazi, my heart bleeds. I want Africa to work.

      Jacqui - 2012-04-13 11:34

Sazi, can you imagine how it makes me feel, after forty years of struggling for a change in this country and this is what we got and get.No wonder I feel sad most of the time lately

  • Barefoot - 2012-04-12 15:01

Not diminishing the extent and grave cruelty of farm murders, but i so wish the media esp. news24 could report on township murders as religiously as they do farm murders then certain people could see that they are not the only ones suffering in the free S.A. Just because it's not reported doesn't mean it's not being done, unfortunately black people can't blame race for all murders because they are being killed by black people.

      Jacqui - 2012-04-13 11:39

Barefoot, the sad reality is we have come to expect killings in the townships. It doesn't make it less awful and tragic though and it is another stick to beat the government with for failing the people, all people of this country. Now if people will remember the next time elections come around and not be bullied into voting for this scurge again, things may change for the better.

  • Floris - 2012-04-12 15:11

No crime!!, they set him alight, catch them and set them on fire, let them feel how they will burn in hell!!

  • louis.langenhoven - 2012-04-12 15:32

don't worry- our Prez said yesterday SA is safe...

  • Johnnie - 2012-04-12 15:39

Will these bastards never learn that ,that is not the way to foster good relations and respect, but then again, this is South Africa.

  • Russell - 2012-04-12 15:40

Its time the TIGER has awoken!

      ArchAngel - 2012-04-12 19:40

Russell: He did and then his wife caught him, and took him for most of his money ...

  • Nyiks11 - 2012-04-12 15:58

ek dink dit is oor tyd wat die afrikaner boer homself te beskerm , omdat die regering nie bereid is om te doen nie .

  • monnamme - 2012-04-12 16:16

Lol Guys I think there maybe an explanation to this, but it can not go on like this. We need to live in harmony all together. Bongs please do not leave SA and Africa does not deserve to starve, what it needs to people who wont put blame on it everytime something bad happens to a particular group of people of this country; this just shows we not in all together.Having said this I believe government must find the guilt once and be brought to justice; Us counting how many and when this has happened just fuel the matter aggrieved by stas and comments such as those that seem to say some are only here (in SA) to benefit. Please people can we at least love this country/continent of ours and stop cursing the already cursed of the world.

      Nyiks11 - 2012-04-12 16:40

sadly Thabiso is telling the truth about the comparison with the rhino

      TaniaSandraSteyn - 2012-04-12 23:34

When, Thabiso? The poacher? I will rejoice if all poachers have proper jobs and decide that killing such an animal is against the laws of nature. {Thinking} many of the poachers and their bosses already had proper jobs - therefore their motive is greed. By the same token: people in government positions earn fantastic salaries. Why do they still find it necessary to steal? Ga man. Vieslik.

      Johan - 2012-04-13 07:40

The African you're referring to robbed SA of its game and wouldn't mind killing game wardens (of which 90% are black). So the only pig around here is you for supporting the criminal. Let me guess, you're a ANCYL member?

      Jacqui - 2012-04-13 11:43

Monnamme, when black people toy toy outside a courthouse when these people doing these crimes to white people are brought to justice, I will startt to have hope that we are all in this together.

  • china.phashe - 2012-04-12 17:54

This is real bad for sure. But have you seen how some of these farmers treat their workers. They beat them, make them work long hours on empty stomacks, make them sleep in tereble conditions, and very little money they get.Thats the couse for anger, this farmer is very much known by his attackers.

      Brett - 2012-04-12 17:58

Yes I have heard that many black farmers treat their workers this way.

      Dewald - 2012-04-12 18:36

@China Evidence please. Sounds like ANC propaganda to me. You must be a complete imbecile to put yourself and family in danger by beating a farm worker. Especially if you have workforce of a couple hundred. Seems like history truly repeats itself.

      sally.lewitt - 2012-04-12 22:44

FU China.phashe, take your medication and stay in your padded cell you sick troll!

      TaniaSandraSteyn - 2012-04-12 23:40

They do, China? All of them? Bugger you and that old horse you rode in on. Please give Bluezulu a lift out of town. He needs to catch a flight to New Zealand.

      Carla - 2012-04-13 09:41

@China - please don't generalise. There are very many farmers out there that do as much as they can for their employees and they are still targeted. In the cases where the farmworkers are badly treated, why do they not approach the authorities? Surely that makes more sense?

      Jacqui - 2012-04-13 11:47

China, Now am I suppose to think you have first hand knowledge or is it all hearsay?. I will be the first to agree there are farmers not worthy of the name human being. But there are also farmworkers who steal the farmer blind. So what is your point or is it justified killing farmers because the minority of farmers treat their workers badly?.

      Ilse - 2012-04-13 13:31

Every time a farmer get killed we get this stupid comment. Most farmers build houses with electricity ext, most farmers are very good to their employers, and most farmers look after the entire family of their employers, the cousin the uncle aunties ext. Only a barbarian kills like this, and if you not happy with your farmer boss, find another boss.
