Bloemfontein - An alleged dagga smuggler was caught after a high-speed chase outside Bloemfontein on Tuesday, Free State police said.

Warrant Officer Zweli Mohobeleli said members of the Bloemfontein K9 unit were patrolling the Dewetsdorp road.

"This road is notorious for the transportation of dagga between Lesotho and South Africa."

Mohobeleli said police tried to pull over a vehicle travelling from Dewetsdorp towards Bloemfontein but the driver refused to stop.

A high speed chase ensued near the Grootvlei Prison.

At an intersection next to Phase 5 near the city, two men abandoned the car and ran away. The police gave chase and one of the men was arrested.

Fifteen bags of dagga, with a street value of about R200 000 were confiscated along with the vehicle.

The man was expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court on charges of dealing in dagga.
