Cape Town - A Free State mother turned her son in this week for allegedly murdering his friend with a garden instrument, according to police.

The mother called the police on Monday morning to tell them her 22-year-old son was at home and had allegedly killed 25-year-old Moeketsi Booi in Thabong the previous day, said Sergeant Mamello Mokhuoane.

He said police had already been on a manhunt for the son and, working together with the mother, made the arrest.

The son later appeared in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that he fought with Booi and stabbed him in the neck with the sharp instrument before apparently fleeing on foot.

Eyewitnesses called the police and paramedics. They declared him dead at the scene.

Mokhuoane said Thabong social crime prevention members had held crime forums last month, in which they informed residents about the importance of reporting criminals, irrespective of whether they were their children or relatives.
