Bloemfontein - Patients at some Free State hospitals have been going hungry after companies stopped supplying food because authorities owed them millions of rands.

Several suppliers to the Thusanong hospital in Odendaalsrus stopped supplying mainly food as they had not been paid for three months, reported Volksblad.

Staff at the hospital apparently had to buy bread for patients with their own money over the weekend as there was no food at the hospital.

Other hospitals in Welkom, Virginia, Bothaville and Hoopstad are in the same boat.

Apparently the suppliers have boxes full of unpaid accounts standing around in their administrative offices.

There is also a lack of cutlery at Thusanong and the few cups and plates that are available have to be washed during meal times after use by some patients, before other patients can eat, resulting in meals stretching over several hours.

The Free State department of health did not respond to queries for comments.
