Welkom - A principal from a high school in Thabong appeared in the Welkom Magistrate's Court on Tuesday after he allegedly raped an 18-year-old pupil from his school, Free State police said.

Sergeant Mamello Mokhuoane said the case was postponed to Thursday for his bail application.

The principal was arrested on August 2 by the police's family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit.

On July 24, the 39-year-old principal dropped pupils off at their homes after a trip to Johannesburg, but did not immediately drop off the 18-year-old, Mokhuoane said.

"When he got to the complainant’s street at a nearby corner, he allegedly stopped and asked the complainant to give him a hug and a kiss and ended up having sexual intercourse with the complainant without her consent.

"The 18-year-old victim informed one of her friends [who also attended] the school, as well as the teachers. Both the teachers and the victim’s mother reported the incident on July 30."
