Free State prison hostage drama ends

2012-11-20 08:14

Bloemfontein - A Mangaung prison doctor being held hostage by two inmates was freed at around 07:00 on Tuesday morning, Free State police said.

A police task force team entered the room and freed the doctor, unharmed, from the two inmates, spokesperson Brigadier Billy Jones said.

The two men were arrested.

They took the doctor hostage while they were undergoing their weekly medical check-up at 11:00 on Monday. They forced their way into the medical room and held the doctor and a nurse hostage.

They later released the nurse. The two allegedly assaulted her. She sustained bruises and minor injuries.

The men had been changing their demands throughout Monday night. The prisoners reportedly wanted a transfer to a prison in Gauteng.

A prisoner can also be arrested in prison........

      kenpeg.dawson - 2012-11-20 09:05

Arrested and held on additional charges over and above what they are in for already.

@Julie, my thoughts as well! How does a prisoner get arrested?

      Arrest is a verb.

Well done to the special task force. I think they have never lost a hostage in all there time. I just feel sorry for those two inmates- NOT REALLY.

      Mag Altern - 2012-11-20 08:49

how do you know that the Dr was rescued by the police task force team? for all we know the prisoners could have let the hostage go just like they did to the nurse. the fact that the police rescued him! i honestly doubt it. i mean what took them so long from yesterday just to rescue someone from prisoners armed with knives. hahahahahaha i dont buy it.

      wagiedah.naidoo - 2012-11-20 09:10

@ Mag Altern- read the artical, anyway why they took so long was because if all else fails then they go in. Normally the hostage takers die. I know for a fact that the STF saved the Doc.

This plan was a spur of the moment thing

  • braamc - 2012-11-20 08:26

We demand. How unusual even in prison.

  • kala.bafazi - 2012-11-20 08:28

No more medical check ups for prisoners. If they are sick let them sort it out amongst themselves or they must just suffer.

  • itumeleng.mogaki - 2012-11-20 08:30

Glad they were freed from this evil thugs.

  • dragonfire47 - 2012-11-20 08:31

ha ha the prisoners were arrested, classic, throw the rubbish into the hole

  • mart.botha - 2012-11-20 08:40

Hats off to the task team for rescuing the Doctor unharmed. I would still like to think that maximum and deadly force was an option if this rescue had failed. It is critically important now that these two mutants be made an example of....an example that is shared with all and sundry, particularly those who consider prison as just one of those things that life gives you to endure. Trust me when I say that thousands upon thousands of people in this country expect to go to prison....it is a reality to that many people. For example, while I was at Cape Town City Hall last week, a taxi driver with R6000 worth of fines was waiving around his bail slip....for R6000. He 'matter of factly' told me that it was cheaper for him to get arrested for his fines than to actually ask for them to be reduced and pay them. Until prison life becomes the absolute worst place to be....it will not serve as a deterrant. (off topic perhaps but I needed to share.)

    Alls well that ends well.

TASK TEAM MY BEHIND... our police are just weak, precision and timing should have put an end to this as soon as they took the two hostage...and what about THE NEGOTIATORS?? whats their job ???

  • mshiniboys - 2012-11-20 09:27

Change of Venue comrades we are not going to Mangaung after this incidence, back to Polokwane. We cant leave everything to chance. This is a counter evolutionary incident. Some people would say :)

MANGAUNG - Isn’t that where the ANC conference is taking place? Should let all the prisoners out when that’s going on... LOL

      jane.dawson.165 - 2012-11-20 09:44

      Love your thinking :-)

  • shirley.steenkamp - 2012-11-20 09:34

Glad this had a happy ending. The prison obviously needs to step up its security or there will be many more "inhouse" arrests!!!!!

  • jane.dawson.165 - 2012-11-20 09:43

On the upside....arrested..in jail....is this not an oxymoron

  • lulama.mkunqwana - 2012-11-20 11:14

My heart goes out to poor health practitioners. The movies that inmates watch should be sensored because I think these stupid fools watch too much movies. Moreover I also think they are not kept busy enough, for instance they should be sent to the farms to at leats earn their keep.
