Free State protesters on the rampage

2012-08-16 12:01

Bloemfontein - Protesters at Marquard and Moemaneng have set alight a vehicle and damaged another during protests, Free State police said on Thursday.

Captain Phumelelo Dhlamini said a group of people started to gather and block roads with stones and burning tyres at 19:00 on Wednesday.

During the protest, one person was injured and a municipal vehicle was damaged.

Dhlamini said the R708 between Clocolan and Marquard was also blocked with stones. A vehicle on this road was set alight by a group of people. Police urged all motorists to use alternative roads.

Dhlamini said police were monitoring the situation and that re-inforcements were on their way.

It was not immediate clear why the protest started, however residents have previously protested against a lack of water and other aspects of service delivery.

About 20 people were arrested in July for public violence and for looting foreign-owned shops in town and in the informal settlement after handing a memorandum to the Setsoto local municipality.

Get Zuma back here, his own country is burning. All African mediation should be left to the knowledgable and educated in that field. The Mbeki's are ideal for that job. And the ex-Mrs Zuma can now start taking her work seriously and independantly(!) from Jacob's influence.

There is something seriously wrong with the mentality of these people that come election time the majority of service delivery protesters WILL vote the cANCer into power yet again !

The ANC made this country ungovernable pre 94. They must make it governable again, untill then, Savage, barbarian, tribal ignorance and no respect for property will remain the order of the ANC bosses...

  • Hermann - 2012-08-16 12:19

Barbarians out out and out. Gimmee and entitlement is their reason for living NOT to contribute. "Make South Africa ungovernable" was the so called struggle war cry and now the ANC is succeeding in achieving it. Nice to see the chickens coming home to roost.

      dewalds3 - 2012-08-16 12:45

No need to make and ungoverned country ungovernable...

Unfortunately people are not able to help themselves, with all the energy used to cause chaos in the streets if the energy was used constructively a water treatment plant could of been built sevicing the peoples needs.

Well Done again . if something does not work , lets burn it . The reason why democracy will not work in Africa, because its all textbook. Sorry , i forgot that our text books get dumped , or the libraries that store them get burnt. You can not impose a system onto a country that stems from tribal ruling . Stone this, steal that ,burn this . The sad thing is that the only thing Africans can share , is poverty. If you rise above others, lets kill it . Everybody loves to blame the White Guy , and no I am not White , but its getting absurd now. You elected a government to serve you , now deal with it . The White man has been blamed for everything ...., well count your stars lucky , cause had they not arrived this entire country would have been decimated by the Zulus . Go and read about Shaka Zulu and his Mefecane Wars. Sorry , I am sure you have burnt that book as well. The main reason behind the downfall of the black people in this country , is because of your own fault . Taking accountability for your actions. but having said that , I apologize. You have the highest rate of single motherhood in the country , 47% !. A fatherless nation is what we are seeing . My days , we got belted for speaking out of turn , you have not had the blessing of a home , where human truth principles are instilled. Don't STEAL , DON'T ROB , DON't KILL. I love the jabber about UBUNTU . It is fictional , I am yet to see this .

howling wolf. The lot sitting on the koppie at the mines in Rustenburg reminded me of my history book when the Zulu impis fought from their koppie. So since then nothing has changed ! Koppies and all.

But these people voted 26 of the 35 wards(74%) to the greatest liberation movement in the universe. They must be happy and sing kumbiyaa together, what's this protesting and burning nonsense?

  • jurie.nel.3 - 2012-08-16 13:44

"It was not immediately clear why the protest started..." So one must assume that it either started spontaneously or was planned in advance by some person or group. Spontaneous? I think not. So we are left with planned protest, destruction of property and sheer hooliganism. The more I read about this kind of thing, the more I am reminded of the early 1980's, and the more I believe that the same organisation is behind it. The struggle is not yet over. The "People's War", it seems to me, is being rekindled - this time not to draw attention to injustices, but to draw attention away from government failures. The technique is the same - cause mayhem, then blame it on someone else. I fear very much that the ANC has not successfully made the transition from struggle organisation to ruling political party.

And here we go again. Running around destroying everything. Retarded little primates. Take your issues to the ANC.
