French couple barricaded selves in house

2011-01-20 14:57

Johannesburg - A French couple on the run from police in the Karoo town of Sutherland were shot dead on a farm in the area on Thursday afternoon, eNews reported.

A reporter at the scene described it as a "Hollywood style movie", overrun with police and journalists.

The couple was apparently shot after barricading themselves inside a house on the farm.
A doctor was yet to arrive to confirm the deaths.

Philippe Menieré, 60, and Agnes Jardel, 55, had evaded police since Friday, after shooting dead a police officer and wounding another on the farm Hardie.

Owner Gerhardus du Plessis had tried to evict them from his property, where they had been living for 12 years, when he found a number of unlicensed firearms in their possession.

Four policemen arrived at the property with a warrant to search for the weapons. According to media reports Menieré shot dead student Constable Jacob Boleme, 27, at point blank range, and Jardel wounded Warrant Officer Glenwall du Toit, 42, in the back.

Du Toit was taken to a Cape Town hospital.

A press conference was expected to be held later.

I am disapointed. I would have thought that after the great getaway, they would at least put up a spectacular fight. Instead they allow themselfs to be shot like that. I am very disapointed.

      CTS - 2011-01-21 07:50

Ever experienced a thunderflashes inside a building? Attempt a fight after being dazed by two those. You'll understand.

  • JohannV - 2011-01-20 15:12

"A French couple WERE shot..." "The couple WAS apparently..." Come ON, get it right!!! "Couple" is a singular entity, not like "them" or "people".

Good result! That is why i want the death penalty back. Those two can not harm anybody now! Let us do the same with all other murderers, rapists, etc. Then they will be harmless too!

      chicken - 2011-01-20 16:07

      MP3 - 2011-01-20 15:50

HERE is the "Idiots guide to why the death penalty should not be re-instated" It's easier to apologise than to ask for permission. Imagine all the paperwork...

  • MaestroX - 2011-01-20 15:52

Please tell me how 4 policeman go to a spot knowing there are unlicensed firearms and 2 get shot and the perpetrators get away, what did the other 2 cops do, run and hide in the bush. If you are going to a site where there are unlicensed firearms "SURELY YOUR PEA SIZED BRAIN TELLS YOU TO BE ON THE LOOKOUT?????" I feel terrible for the 2 that were shot but were they not in the least bit suspicious??? Aren't you immediately arrested for possessing unlicensed firearms? Had the cops done their job properly none of this would have happened!! They should have gone in there and arrested the couple on finding the firearms; they were apparently happily loading the weapons into the police car with their backs to the couple and got shot!!! Why did the other two cops who were there not open fire?

      Worldwise - 2011-01-20 16:03

And I suppose that after a rugby game you tell everybody at work on Monday exactly what the team did wrong and how they could have won the game. If only they had radio earpieces and you were directing them. Hindsight is always 100%.

      ntombzam - 2011-01-20 16:16

Maesrto X I dont know if you dum or brain dead. Re-read the story. The police were shot when they went to search for the unlicensed firearms hence they had a search warrant with them... Aagh, why do i even bother!

      MaestroX - 2011-01-20 16:36

ntombzam Perhaps you didn't read the story from the word go. The one police officer was already loading the "unlicensed firearms" into their vehicle when they were shot at. Perhaps you should first learn to follow the story from the beginning. I was merely intrigued at how 4 officers go to a crime scene, arrive, find the weapons, not arrest the culprits, let them walk back into the house, then get shot at, killing one, wounding another and the other 2 cops don't return fire, enabling the 2 criminals to get away. I am just asking questions guys, not trying to be clever. So please ntombzam, grow up and learn to spell while you are at it!!! As for you “Worldwise” I suppose you don’t have an opinion other than to slate those who do, you and ntombzam should get together, you might enjoy one another’s company, dingbats

      askari.za - 2011-01-20 17:47

I have been wondering the same thing. Don't think the cops were careful enough in the beginning.

  • Staal_Burger - 2011-01-20 15:53

Conspicuous how white criminal (more so foreign white criminals) are apprehended and disposed of within days. There is a list from here to the very top of the government of BLACK CRIMINALS who never get caught (eg the recent spate of murders in Mpumalanga reportedly linked to SWC favours). The law of the jungle now reigns...

      Ms Athlone - 2011-01-20 16:08

I'm inclined to agree. The Mpumalanga murder's have been swept under the carpet, or so it seems. I suppose it's because the perpetrators are ANC officials. The Untouchables who get away with murder...

      Crispy_Duck - 2011-01-20 16:25

It's to do with the criminal's ability to blend in with the rest of the population. French speaking Ramtha cult loonies aren't exactly that common in South Africa...

      Spyker - 2011-01-20 17:11

Crispy..., Is it a case of "blending" or being “concealed”..?

  • larrikin - 2011-01-20 15:55

respect the dead, nevertheless may they souls rest in peace and dat of constable.

  • Livhuwani - 2011-01-20 15:58

  • Migsy - 2011-01-20 16:09

HAS ANYONE EVER NOTICED THAT WHENEVER COPS ARE LOOKING FOR A COP KILLER-THE COP KILLER IS ALWAYS SHOT DEAD....I think the cops would of shot this french couple vrek anyway...whether they surrenderd or not.

      Mikemcc - 2011-01-20 22:01

      No problem then!

      Kyle_logan - 2011-01-21 08:01

yes, but thats the point. Dont shoot cops or you'll die.

  • Crispy_Duck - 2011-01-20 16:23

Once again religion results in people dying...

      FastJan - 2011-01-20 17:27

Being born leads to dying as well. So does driving, riding a bicycle (this week at least), going to school (this week x 2), jumping off Van Staden's bridge (this week x 1)and coming to SA on honeymoon.

      Wonderboy - 2011-01-20 17:57

That was fast and accurate, Fastjan

  • Patricky - 2011-01-20 20:21
