Frenzied crowd hacks cattle after truck overturns

2015-01-21 15:55

Johannesburg - A crowd of people tried to hack meat off cattle after a trailer they were being transported in overturned on the N1 in Gauteng, the NSPCA said on Wednesday.

"With knives and buckets, the mob was chasing cattle that had managed to release themselves from the vehicle, some of which had injuries including broken legs. Their intention was to hack meat from the living animals," the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) said in a statement.

"Some animals were unable to escape and were stolen or slaughtered by the frenzied crowd."

The driver allegedly lost control of the truck near the Grasmere toll plaza around 17:00 on Tuesday after rocks were thrown at his vehicle from a bridge.

The NSPCA, police, fire and rescue units, and the traffic department worked to clear the road, control the crowd, and free trapped cattle using the Jaws of Life.

Some of the cattle who were "beyond salvation" were slaughtered on the scene.

Sounds like the same thing done during farm murders.

  • Glynis Higgins - 2015-01-21 16:03

This has to be the epitomy of mindless savagery! I am sick to my stomach....There is no hope , no compassion and no sympathy for any nation whose population can do this.

  • Johnny Doe - 2015-01-21 16:03

How a "civilization" treats its animals says a lot about a civilization.

      David Khumalo - 2015-01-21 16:18

and how they treat their women and children.

This country is seriously screwed. How on earth can you govern this lot ?

  • Mlungisi Kelembe - 2015-01-21 16:04

    F'unbelievable!

  • Nceba Mbane - 2015-01-21 16:05

The cattle were on the way to the abbattoir to be killed and slaughtered. Eventually they would end up on the shelves at Woolies where the disgusted people would then buy them,..... as prime cuts of grain fed free roaming lean beef.

      Alex Vincent - 2015-01-21 16:08

Are you seriously that stupid... do you think they chase the livestock around at the abattoir hacking pieces of meat of the living animal with broken legs. I hope some day you get hacked up alive with blunt knives while you bleed to death. Who are the animals here. The crowd or the cattle... certainly not the cattle.

      Clive Pops - 2015-01-21 16:08

Nceba, it's not actually about the cattle; it's about the "people". You know, those compassionate creatures full of empathy etc. Oh, wait.....

      Eddie Jnr De Gouveia - 2015-01-21 16:12

Uh... where does it say it was on the the way to an abattoir?

      Freddie Miller - 2015-01-21 16:13

...and the lowest common denominator speaks... complete rubbish as usual.

      LovelyLuna - 2015-01-21 16:13

I'm at a loss for words to this justification. The mob threw rocks at the truck. First problem. The remainder is just sick and no justification will suffice. End of story. No humane society carries on like this.

      Johan Arno Cilliers - 2015-01-21 16:15

Alex, yes he is that stupid..There are LOADS of them.

      Peter Ryan - 2015-01-21 16:15

      ....that's exactly it....African logic

      Nceba Mbane - 2015-01-21 16:16

I like the holier than thou, mr know it all attitude of some of you. The cattle were injured so you suggest the guys should have waited for sharpshooters to shoot them first, before slaughtering them? Waited while cattle were suffering in agony? Of coarse they were hacked while they were still alive. Hacked to death to end their misery, they cut them up and go cook them. Yes cook the cattle. Beef comes from cattle, you know. And the cattle must be killed first. The quikst way possble. And hacking a injured cow at its back neck kills it quick. What really is your problem?

      Awatime - 2015-01-21 16:16

Nceba "does the word Hunting ring a bell to you" ?That my dear fiend is a civilised way of torchering an animal .You shoot it brake its leg or something chase it and cut it .

      David Khumalo - 2015-01-21 16:22

they where hacking of meat while they where running, it does not say they cut the beats throat and then started cutting of meat, in a mob like that you think they act civilized ????

  • Frederick John Frier - 2015-01-21 16:05

    Certainly not human !!!!!!

  • Andrew Robert Slaughter - 2015-01-21 16:05

Its all so civilised when meat is nicely wrapped and packaged at your local supermarket. Events like this remind us that we are no more than killer apes.

  • sherwin.singh2 - 2015-01-21 16:06

I'm conflicted, I don't know if I'm angry at how savage the people are or feel sad at how desperate the people are for food. Either way is shows the plight that the underprivileged go through ??

  • Nicholas von Stein - 2015-01-21 16:06

This is what happens when people are desperate.......

  • Anakin Stealthwalker - 2015-01-21 16:26

Behaviour reminiscent of scenes at the start of "2001: A Space Odyssey" - barbaric and savage. When will they evolve and stop throwing stones at moving objects? In another 10 000yrs maybe? I feel nauseous.
