Friend: Oscar kept saying it was a mistake

2013-02-18 08:52

Pretoria - A neighbour and friend of Oscar Pistorius has revealed how he called her early on Valentine’s Day morning, frantically asking her to come to the house.

The woman, who was not identified, lived in the same Silver Woods complex in Pretoria with her parents and was said to be a lawyer, reported the Sunday Tribune.

She said Pistorius was frantic on the phone and said something had gone horribly wrong and that there had been a shooting.

The woman said she rushed over and as she opened the door to his home, she saw the Paralympian carrying Reeva Steenkamp’s blood-soaked body down the stairs.

He put Steenkamp’s body between them on the floor and they tried to stop the bleeding.

The woman said they couldn’t do anything to save Steenkamp’s life and that she was pronounced dead by paramedics a little while later.

The woman said she tried to console Pistorius, who kept telling her it was a mistake and that he hadn’t meant to do it. He told her he thought Steenkamp was an intruder.

According to Tribune sources, the paralympian told police he was awoken by noises that seemed to come from the bathroom.

He reached for the pistol at his bedside and fired the fatal shots through the bathroom door.

The woman has joined a long list of witnesses questioned by police.

I so hope this is true, although I seriously doubt so...

      roger.hess.14 - 2013-02-18 09:13

I'm staying neutral as more developments seem to be coming out every hour; the only thing that is a fact is that another beautiful and talented young lady is now dead. Too many "Experts" are chipping in with all kinds of speculation which does no one any good. Just based on the media frenzy going on right now it looks like South Africa could be in for US style OJ Simpson case; if so I really feel for her parents!

      Xavier7034 - 2013-02-18 09:17

Has almost eerie echoes of O.J Simpson - the U.S. Football hero who became zero when he killed his wife and a boyfriend.

      RabbleRouser - 2013-02-18 09:24

He is still in big trouble anyway. The Gun control act of 2000 makes such acts a criminal offence. As a gun owner he has to take responsibility for his actions. He will have to prove that his life was being threatened or that he was in in some form of imminent danger. That was not the case. So he will definitely be facing some jail time.

      John Eritas - 2013-02-18 09:34

Did anyone else also had to throw their FHM away? It seems weird to keep it...

      mapepaki - 2013-02-18 09:36

God I hope the cricket bat and fractured skull part aren't true how she must have suffered, and then to shoot her dead. Did she not get up to go to the bathroom other nights.

      shadi.mnisi - 2013-02-18 09:38

      Me too, Johan.

      boerewors.braaivleis - 2013-02-18 09:41

Be what it may Oscar, you are still in trouble. You can’t just shoot someone nowadays… They need to attack you first! You are going to jail boet… I want to believe you and I almost think you are telling the truth, but we will need to see the evidence first. - 2013-02-18 09:41

I wonder if he sleeps WITH or WITHOUT his prosthetic legs? .... if he did NOT have his legs clipped on and there WAS an intruder there might have been a reason for a 'helpless' man to shoot at someone from his bed .... but THIS does NOT sound like this was the case .... at all!!

      chaapo.sithole - 2013-02-18 09:45

A mistake is once, not that many times and a bloodied bat to boot. This is it for the cruel man.

      darren.raath.5 - 2013-02-18 09:58

who the hell shoots towards a closed door after hearing some noises???????????????? and if you want to shoot, dont you check to see where your partner is?????????????? i would!!!!!!!!!!!!!! sounds like kok and bull to me..................

      klippies.coke.7 - 2013-02-18 10:01

Ok, so he shot her, and then phoned a "lawyer" friend instead of an ambulance. She arrives, opens the door and he is busy carrying her down the stairs? So the front door was unlocked? The picture that's being painted is of a guy that is paranoid about security and sleeps with two guns and a baseball bat next to the bed. So, he had to go unlock the door first. So, phone a 'lawyer' friend, unlock the door but don't phone the police/ambulance? This does not sound right.

      rodney.overes - 2013-02-18 10:16

Klippies ,SPOT ON, Carrying the body to his cars boot sounds more than likely. But the other neighbors had already phoned the police and they could not clean up the mess in time, that's how I see it

They say jealousy makes u nasty. Well this was taking it to another level. He was fighting with his girlfriend and after less than two hours he shoots her dead. He called his dad first and a ambulance or doctor to help his beloved girlfriend. And oh yes he called a buddy and said it was a mistake!?? He knew what he was doing.

and he didnt notice she wasnt in bed?

      nu_un_clear - 2013-02-18 09:37

That will be the main question from the prosecutor. This case hangs around his answer to your question. I can see how his angles of the projectiles could be reached from his position on the bed ( I don't think he sleeps with his prosthetics on), therefore I think he was lying on the bed when he fired, but what I can't understand is why did he not look for steenkamp? (Again assuming that she was sleeping next to him)

      kitneyi - 2013-02-18 09:44

he reached for his pistol next to his bed... isn't it supposed to be locked in a safe?

      marco.hudson.33 - 2013-02-18 11:10

And he was only aiming as if he knew the person was sitting down on the toilet. Why would an intruder go and "use" your toilet? The first thing a guy do is to call for your girlfriend when u hear something and she's NOT beside u. U dont just shoot recklessly. He was aiming to kill. Pathetic.

  • jake.muso.9 - 2013-02-18 09:02

My girlfriend goes to the bathroom every night...I've never awoken without her next to me, heard someone in the bathroom and thought "That's an intruder, let's shoot first and ask questions later..."

You're also not handicapped and don't know the full circumstances. Give the case time to play out - I'm sure your sordid fantasies will be fulfilled

      rich.snyder.146 - 2013-02-18 09:15

I suppose this is because you didn't want to kill your girlfriend... Other reports are saying there was a bloody cricket bat in the room, and Reeva had a cracked skull. He sounds like a psychopathic liar/killer.

      john.silver.3572846 - 2013-02-18 09:17

Correct Jake..If an intruder comes into somebody's house he will try to kill/rob the home owner first then use the bathroom..not the other way around. No intruder is so cocky to use the bathroom before attacking his prey.. - 2013-02-18 09:39

The question is, why was he so paranoid? Had there been previous intrusions or armed robberies in the Golf Estate?

      john.silver.3572846 - 2013-02-18 09:32

      Suggested starting point:

      dolphindunes.guesthouse - 2013-02-18 09:38

The so called security estates is just a myth. Criminals rent houses on the estates and do their deeds from there. It is the developers that is scoring from the fear of average South Africans.

      rodney.overes - 2013-02-18 10:25

Why was he so paranoid? Got caught red handed and does not know what to lie next,Carrying the body to his cars boot sounds more than likely. But the other neighbors had already phoned the police and they could not clean up the mess in time, that's how I see it

  • jesomerville - 2013-02-18 09:06

such a sad story for all concerned but i think he is guilty and must now pay for what he has done

  • lance.elliott.3914 - 2013-02-18 09:07

So for starters he accidently hit an intruder with a cricket bat(the intruder obviously didnt respond or say "Honey its just me")...He then fired one shot into the 'intruders hip' in the bedroom..(Still the intruder chose to remain silent by not screaming giving OScar no clue its his lover ?)...'the intruder' then runs to the bathroom to hide and he decides to shoot the mute intruder three mored times when he cant even see who 'the intruder' is. After hitting her for the first time with a bat she would have screamed and he should have stopped..He had three chances to stop 1) after the first hit with the bat 2) after the first shot in the room 3)three more shots in the bathroom(by then it was too late, he had made up his mind to kill her)...NO ACCIDENT AT ALL - FACT

      kevin.watson.7906 - 2013-02-18 09:30

Lance if a strong man hit someone with a cricket bat they probably wouldn't go anywhere if hit on the head. I do not think anyone shot in the hip would run anywhere, crawl maybe (I have been shot). No one pulls the trigger 4 times by mistake, each shot fired takes concious thought to make happen.

      nu_un_clear - 2013-02-18 09:44

Thank God you are not a judge. The bat was not used to fracture her scull. Stop buying into the media frenzy, no official reports have been released and you are clearly not an expert on anything except believing EVERYTHING you read on N24.

      Bullet Proof - 2013-02-18 09:49

This is my initial thougt according the media facts and i think you are right if those facts are correct. The best Oscar have to do now is to confess why and who he did it and come clean and pay the price, is expensive lawyers just are going to spend is money, better keep that money for is pension when he comes out in 25 years.Invested, and will have a lots of interest.

      lance.elliott.3914 - 2013-02-18 09:51

@ Kevin..I stand to be corrected re the shot in the hip being in the bedroom (newspaper reporting). She was also shot in the hand which was more than likely her first defensive wound in the bedroom. I have seen a stuntman make a fool of himself doing a demonstration on "how not to break somebody's nose". he hit at the volunteers nose in slow motion, we heard a crack and a river of blood followed. He could have knicked her nose with the bat..The papers have said nothing about him having any bllody wounds, so all my speculation is possible. 10/10 to Kevin for trying to be impartial..but the numbers DONT add up in this case.

      nadia.londt - 2013-02-18 10:01

lance - everything you saying here was my thinking too ... as much as we all respect and love Oscar, if he is guilty, and evidence thus far points in that direction, then he must pay for what he has done as it is sick BEYOND SICK! My heart goes out to the Steenkamps. And for every other sister, mother and daughter out there if you in an abusive relationship GET OUT IMMEDIATELY!!!!

      lance.elliott.3914 - 2013-02-18 10:05

@ nu_unclear...Was the bloodied bat used to tenderize the steak her he cooked for her before he shot her ?

      lance.elliott.3914 - 2013-02-18 10:20

Nadia, I was a big fan of Oscar, followed him on Facebook..I have had a good think about the facts(bloodied cricket bat and four shots) and I am happy with my guilty verdict. The only other way he is innocent is if he was 'mind controlled by the CIA..'(his history with the law doesnt help him either)

      nu_un_clear - 2013-02-18 10:34

Maybe I missed the report that said that the blood on the bat belonged to Steenkamp? If so, sorry for that.

Funny how you are spending the night with the most betuiful girl in the world and she gets up to go to the toilet and you don't first check to see where she is you just pick up the gun and shoot. With his training to fire a gun this does not come to mind!!!!!!

      willie.bentz - 2013-02-18 09:32

That's exactly what baffles me. If I hear a noise - the 1st thing I will check is - where is my wife/partner for her safety. I smell something and it's not roses. More like a rat !!

      mark.singh.9889 - 2013-02-18 09:15

Maybe the intruder just wanted to take a bubble bath

  • michael.taylorw - 2013-02-18 09:08

um, you wake up and your gf is not in bed with you. You hear a noise in the bathroom. the first reaction for any individual would be to first, assume it is your gf. If you are the paranoid sort, assume your gf is hiding under the bed and call out to her. If she replies "yes honey, I am in the bathroom?" You can put the gun back under your pillow. If she replies that she heard a noise and s hiding under your bed, you can then assume that it is not her in the bathroom. A quick visual under the bed would confirm this. You can then proceed to get panicky and shoot at the door. What person shoots through a bathroom door first, especially when his gf is staying over????? And is this the first time any of his gf's got up in the middle of the night for a pee??? seriously! This does not make sense on any level.

      lance.elliott.3914 - 2013-02-18 09:30

If I heard an intruder in my bathroom I would first check my wife is safe next to me, then tell her to be quiet..then stalk the bastard in the bathroom..I would never risk her waking up screaming which might alert the attacker. One outcome for Oscar - GUILTY of murder.

  • pierre.opperman - 2013-02-18 09:09

  • hanneliemaartens.weitsz - 2013-02-18 09:18

Apparently she was possibly shot in the hip in the bedroom and then later shot through the bathroom door 3 times. The plot thickens. Steroids were found in the bedroom. Im thinking, steroids combined with alcohol which was consumed at a party just a few hours before, caused him to act irrationally and very aggressively and he lost it.

I don't know what happened but I don't understand this spin on the story - he knew she was in the house, and he still shot 4 times and bashed her head in thinking she was an intruder? Surely she cried out and he realised it was her? Surely the first thing he did when he thought an intruder was in the house, was make sure she was okay? You dont fire 4 shots at someone, hit them on the head with a bat and then ask who it is...

If she was in bed with him at the time, as it appears she was, because, according to City Press, she was in her nighty and had an overnight bag there, surely he would have noticed that she was no longer in the bed and would have first wanted to check where she was, before shooting 'at random' through a closed door? If you wake up because of a noise, and find your partner not alongside you, would you not assume it was him/her making the noise or at the very least be concerned for their safety?

  • kavin.naidoo - 2013-02-18 09:23

One shot is possibly a mistake. Four sounds like he was trying to get the job done. Even if a mistake, a stupid one at that. Years ago, an idiot shot through his front door because he heard rustling noises. He killed the guy delivering his newspaper. The stupidity of gun owners and their resultant mistakes.

  • elliot.gxolo.1 - 2013-02-18 09:23

And the spin doctors start "spinning stories"! WTF is this now, why is News24 even airing this crap? This new team Oscar has surrounded himself with will come up with 100 different accounts of what could've happened all just to create sympathy for Pistorious, and to plant seeds of doubts in our head.. You don't accidentally 6 gun shots, you don't accidentally hit your partner with a cricket bat.. Let's say he really thought she was an intruder: after the first shot you would hear screams (my guess is you would be able to recognize your gf's voice) and then would stop shooting!!! Oscar tell your people they must stop causing you a lot more embarrassment and shame!!!! If you were man enough to murder a defenseless woman, be man enough to admit it and face your punishment!!!!!!

What about the bloodied cricket bat and the fact the security was called out earlier that night because of a domestic row mentioned in the earlier reports. Nah, sounds too fishy.

No comments or information has been released from the police concerning all of the "stories" we seem to hear. I think the media has just jumped on the bandwagon with their stories. I will believe he is innocent/guilty on how his court case goes, not what the media says.

Load of rubbish. How do you not notice your girlfriend is not in bed and then immediately start shooting when you hear a noise. And forensic tests say the first bullet hit her in the hip. I bet my left nut that if you shoot a woman in the hip she will scream or make some kind of noise... Then there's that cricket bat story... Definitely not rocket science to me...
