Johannesburg - Police say the fugitive British drug baron and convicted fraudster who was arrested in Midrand at the weekend, was using a fake Cyprus passport and had been staying with a woman believed to be a Cypriot.

Martin Evans, 52, from Swansea in Wales, was arrested in a secure, gated suburban housing estate in Midrand in a joint operation by the SAPS and Interpol.

He had been on the run since 2011 when he failed to return to prison after release on a five-day leave, said police spokesperson Solomon Makgale.

Evans will appear in a Pretoria court on Monday for a procedural extradition hearing.

A once-successful businessman, Evans was serving a 21-year jail term for drugs smuggling when in 2011 he failed to return to prison after release on a five-day leave.

Police could not specify when Evans entered South Africa, with Makgale saying they were still investigating.
