Funeral begins for Anene Booysen

2013-02-09 14:56

Johannesburg - A funeral service was underway on Saturday for Anene Booysen, a 17-year-old Western Cape girl who was gang-raped and mutilated in an act of violence that sparked outrage across the country.

A brass band played hymns while hundreds of people turned out for the emotional church service in Bredasdorp, a small town about 80km outside Cape Town.

She was to be buried later in the day, broadcaster eNCA reported.

President Jacob Zuma has expressed outrage over the brutal attack, which has drawn comparisons to the rape and murder of a 23-year-old physiotherapy student in India.

Three men, all in their early 20s, have been arrested in connection with the rape and murder of Booysen. One of the men was reportedly her ex-boyfriend.

May her soul rest in peace. May her family find closure in this unbelievably horrific tragedy. As a woman, this is so scary. Women in SA are generally not safe. We need to fight this evil as a nation.

      madise.paul - 2013-02-09 15:26

      hahahah fool!!

      leon.young.9003 - 2013-02-09 15:31

So you blame apartheid? Are you a rapist?Don't you know the difference between good and bad, right or wrong?Look at the rapists age, they don't even know apartheid you fool.

      andre.krige - 2013-02-09 15:32

@phuti. There is absolutely no excuse for this despicable act of savagery. pls don't even try and blame. Everyone together , as a human race as a whole, needs to put an end to this horrific and destructive epidemic called rape. Something really needs to be done before it destroys this society .

      Sthere - 2013-02-09 15:41

phuthi, i am also a black, unemployed and fatherless individual but i do not share the same views as you. Apartheid, illiteracy and policits has absolutely NOTHING to do with a person raping someone else! Its sort of like a disease thats plaguing our society, these men deserve nothing better than the death penalty!!!!

      estie.erasmus.3 - 2013-02-09 15:52

Phuti the next flight to Australia is tomorrow you missed today's one, please go and pack you clothes, but take all the other fools who blame aparheid for everything with you. R.I.P Anene Booysen . To you family may God be with you

      sango.jika - 2013-02-09 15:58

I don't know what you are smokin for the record no black person was involved in this barbaric act.

      leslie.erasmus.1 - 2013-02-09 16:02

Shame on you PHUTI,rape happens worldwide especially in Africa, now u want to blame apartheid! My gut feeling is that u think the victim was white and deserves what happened, go read who the perpetrator and others are.u are disgusting!

      Sulette Behnke - 2013-02-09 16:05

So what would the difference be between two 18 year olds that went to the same school since 1994 and had the same oppertunities ? Stop blaming apartheid if you had almost 20 years to prove yourselfs. It's actually just human decision. Plenty of people ( regardless of race) excell without fathers. Why do you have to keep on bringing politics into it? Rather go look at the crime rates pre 1994. And why is it that the older black people keep on telling me they wish they were back in apartheid because it was safer back then? Stop voting for the wrong idiots and stop blaming a government of 20 years ago. Vote for change !

      nico.eksteen.7 - 2013-02-09 16:11

Haha, one does not need education to know that rape, murder, etc. Are wrong. Time to catch a wake-up and stop denial of your own shortcomings.

      leslie.erasmus.1 - 2013-02-09 16:11

Austria orAustralia? I doubt either country will accept u after your comments, why don't u try the DRC?

      frankie.dewing - 2013-02-09 16:30

Then go to Austria....you have it all wrong...keep blaming something else in your life is not going to change your life. Feel sorry for your own ignorance as apartheid was a long time past, like you living in the past. These comments are not for your pity party. Its about criminal offences and how angry we feel about a loss of a life in a gruesome manner!!

      vera.platt - 2013-02-09 22:52

Phuti. Plainly put, your comment shows just how ignorant you yourself are. You will never amount to anything if you keep blaming your faults on others, let alone things that happened 20 years ago.

  • Jacqueline Hammond - 2013-02-09 15:27

Great gesture, but a minute of silence to me means nothing. The cowards who acted in this barbaric manner must be subjected to the punishment they deserve

    RIP

  • colleen.erasmus.7 - 2013-02-09 15:38

Why must everything be blamed on apartheid! This is not a apartheid issue, BUT ONE OF MORAL CHOICE! Each one of us knows the difference between right and wrong as adults! You know that is u drink 20 beers you going to get drunk and will wake up the followig day with a headache, will u do it again. Its got nothing to do with u been unemployed. Educated or not....its a moral issue! Stop blaming apartheid for everything, the people that did this were adults and knew what they were doing!

  • jacque.fransman - 2013-02-09 15:47

O please stop blaming Apartheid and yes men start looking after your kids, everybody is calling for the death penalty for me that's the easy way out for murders for me life without parole so they'll rot in jail

      cristina.d.walters - 2013-02-09 16:01

i see your point - only problem is that they get life in jail - that ensures they have shelter for the rest of their lives, they have water, food n electricity that they dont have to pay - that to me does not sound like sufferring - and in any case the prisons will become so overpopulated the government will do what they did recently - release them on parole with no guarantee that they wont rape the first child they see in my opinion - bring back the death penalty and eradicate these monsters completely from our society once and for all

  • bennievanderwesthuizen - 2013-02-09 16:02

Rest in peace Anene and may your family find closure when those monsters are sentenced... this crime should carry the death sentence no less. Drugs have been blamed for the crime ,but not every drug user commits these heinous crimes for example Kotze was not a drug user and he committed a similar crime hang these psychopath's there is no place in society for them. Anene's case has finally brought the country's attention to rape let's not forget this dear child and may her death not have been in vain. South African let's stand together against these crime now.

I think that FNB needs to seriously be held to a level of accountability for this. The minute that the ANC took the AD personally, FNB should have known that something was going to happy to her. When I saw the AD the first words out of my mouth were - she is brave because she is going to feel the effects of this the hardest. FNB should have seen that there would have been ANC supporters who would have blindly and ignorantly taken this out on her. Anyone denying seeing this link is blindly ignorant themselves.

      joyce.beeton - 2013-02-09 23:55

Could you please translate this into English Vera? What does the FNB advert got to do with this incident?

  • maureen.lyttle - 2013-02-10 00:06

This was a vile, despicable, evil crime and must be punished by the harshest of means. These men (animals) had no empathy or compassion towards the young woman they gang raped, barbarically disembowelled, mutilated, and killed. Any man or juvenile who brutally rapes a woman, child or baby is an abhorrent, sick poison and scourge of society and, in the words of WCD Minister Krishna Tirath, should be hanged. Not incarcerated, but hanged. This would serve as a deterrent to the rest of these vile, despicable rapists, including juveniles, for their heinous, barbaric, savage, evil sexual crimes against women, children, and babies. Perhaps, Africa, you could learn from India? AFRICA, WHERE IS YOUR SHAME??
