Durban - Residents in the sleepy town of Koster in the North West province woke to heavy gunfire and loud explosions last week, after a gang locked up police cars and carried out a daring raid on ATMs.

According to the Sunday Times, two policemen out patrolling heard the explosion and rushed to the scene. There they were faced with six heavily-armed men and engaged in an “epic” gun battle. They were soon joined by their colleagues who had used bolt cutters to free their vehicles.

No injuries were reported but the gang managed to get away with over R200 000 in cash.

Thieves robbing an ATM in Norwood, Johannesburg last year escaped without a confrontation after they told police they were refilling the machine, said SAPA.
