Johannesburg - Five boys and a man accused of gang raping a girl in Letsitele, near Tzaneen, were denied bail in the Ritavi Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, Limpopo police said.

Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said the matter was postponed to 13 July for their formal bail applications.

Mulaudzi said the man would remain in police custody while the five boys, aged between 15 and 17, were taken to a place of safety in Malamulele.

The 16-year-old girl was dragged into an empty house on Saturday, and held down while five boys and a man took turns raping her.

The girl escaped through a broken window and alerted a passer-by, who contacted police.

Mulaudzi said the girl had been taken to a local hospital for medical treatment.

All six suspects were arrested on Sunday.
