Johannesburg - The Krugersdorp Jewish community is in shock after 32 graves in a century-old cemetery were vandalised, The Jerusalem Post reported on Thursday.

According to the Post a local resident, Ryan Machet, discovered the desecrated headstones on Sunday.

Machet said it appeared that vandals toppled the headstones, causing them to shatter.

The Jewish Telegraph Agency reported that representatives from the SA Jewish Board of Deputies would inspect the site.

Rabbi Moshe Silberhaft of the SA Communities and African Jewish Congregation told News24 that it was the first time this cemetery had been targeted by vandals.

"Thirty-two graves were vandalised. Some headstones were badly damaged while others were just cracked."

Silberhaft said the cost to repair the vandalised headstones would be covered by families and members of the community.
