Johannesburg – A firefighter attached to the Orange Farm fire station allegedly shot dead his station commander, who arrived at his home to deliver a summons to appear at a disciplinary hearing, Gauteng police said on Thursday.

The firefighter was arrested at the scene and would appear in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court soon.

The Star newspaper reported that he was one of the firefighters suspended for taking part in an illegal strike earlier this year.

The commander came to the man’s house in Vanderbijlpark on Wednesday night to serve him with the summons, Brigadier Sam Manala said.

An argument broke out and the firefighter allegedly shot and killed the man.

The strike followed the deaths of firefighters Daniel Zwane, 50, and Michael Letsosa, 34 in a blaze in the Nedbank Mall basement on Albertina Sisulu Street, in the Johannesburg CBD in May.

They died from smoke inhalation after they were ordered into the building without a hose, which would have allowed them to find their way out again. This prompted firefighters to call for better working conditions and equipment.
