Gauteng hail causes OR Tambo, Lanseria havoc

Cape Town - A massive hailstorm has hit Krugersdorp in the West Rand in Gauteng on Thursday afternoon.

The area was pelted with hailstones that were reportedly as large as golf balls.

The South African Weather Service earlier issued a warning of hailstorms and thunderstorms in Gauteng and eastern parts of the Freestate, in a red alert status. .

It has been reported that Bultfontein and Welkom in the Freestate were also hit by hail followed by heavy storms.

Flight delays were reported at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg due to the adverse weather in Gauteng.

ER24 reports that Lanseria Airport has also been affected by the weather.

There were also reports coming in of flooding and cars being swept away in parts of Gauteng.

Officials say that the province has been placed on high alert with hail and strong winds possible, according to EWN.
