Gauteng health lambasted

Johannesburg - The Gauteng health department hasn't won any medical negligence claims in two years, the Democratic Alliance said on Sunday.

In the past year alone, it's paid out R44m, said DA spokesperson Jack Bloom.

In one of the recent cases,  Nicholaas van Niekerk, who suffered brain damage at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital in 2005, was awarded R5m plus costs by the South Gauteng Court in Johannesburg last week.

Bloom said Van Niekerk's compensation was to cover loss of earnings, future medical expenses and general damages for pain and suffering, impairment, loss of the amenities of life.

However, Gauteng health department spokesperson Simon Zwane could not confirm this.

"I don't know about it," he said.

Bloom said R11.6m was also awarded to Ntokozo Skhosana, 8, who suffered brain damage at the Far East Rand Hospital in 2004.

"Hospital care must improve radically, otherwise negligence pay-outs will hit the health budget hard," said Bloom.

While health become a challenge to SA Govt and South African, it is my view and plea that opposition parties assist in turning the situation around. This remains a challenge affecting all parties commensurately. Blowing our horn informing nations of the current predicament doesn't in any way assist us in passing over the current stages of challenge.

Unfortunately the views and attempts by the opposition parties are bulldozed away by the overwhelming representation of the ruling party, voted in and maintained in it's position by the illiterate and literate non-thinking masses!

mpho, that is why you give another party a chance. now the ANC supporters want the DA to!

Mpho - generally offers of assistance by other parties are repulsed. The solgan "Working together we can do more" isn't put into practice - which is completely stupid. If it were, much more could be achieved. Even communities are marginalised

Honestly,ANC is pathetic, never ever admit blame or guilt.

"However, Gauteng health department spokesperson Simon Zwane could not confirm this. "I don't know about it," he said." Is Silly Zwane unconscious? Maybe he was brain damaged as well!

I live in Australia now and this would not happen here. Why? Not because they want to save money but because a life with brain damage is one more life with brain damage that shouldn't happen. It's a matter of caring for life

  • brionyl.french - 2012-10-08 06:26
