Gauteng prepares for summer flooding

2012-09-09 18:15

Johannesburg - Gauteng has put in place plans to manage any flooding this coming summer, an official said on Sunday.

"The Gauteng special operation and response system...had been put in place to provide specialised lifesaving assistance within the province in the event of major flooding, disasters or emergencies," said local government and housing spokesperson Motsamai Motlhaolwa.

Motlhaolwa said there would be a joint operations centre in municipalities. Mutual aid agreements were also in place in case of emergencies.

"Our disaster management programme will go a long way in assisting municipalities in Gauteng to deal with disasters when and where they occur," said MEC Ntombi Mekgwe.

Floods wreaked havoc in Gauteng on Thursday and Friday.

Among others, more than 70 shacks had to be rebuilt in Vumimuzi, Tembisa, on the East Rand on Friday after being destroyed by strong winds.

Mekgwe sympathised with the affected families.

"... I am sending my heartfelt sympathy to you. I am also appealing to the private sector to assist government in dealing with such acts of nature. Your donations will be highly appreciated by the humble people of Gauteng," said Mekgwe.

Means: ANC have stolen so much money from Gauteng residents that they will not be nowhere close to the Gouteng and residents are left tho the mercy of Supreme One, whoever they believe in.

Not only that. He still begs for \humble\ residents to donate more money. Thus letting the powers that be, that Joburg residents have extra cash to throw around and they can go ahead on other fleecing scams.

Let me see if I understand this correctly. Plans have been put in place for flooding this coming summer, but they weren't in place on Thursday and Friday? Hmm after the horse bolted seems an accurate assessment...

Will those plans include not allowing people to settle where rivers flood? Or are they going to do what govt does best - treat the symptom not the cause?

people should also stop building shacks every where there is space.

I've seen the *plans* and seriously, it leaves a lot to be desired. a Low lying bridge was cleared by simply dumping all the waste back into the river to no doubt cause problems further down the river. I'm sorry, but our government is a f-ing joke when it comes to planning ahead.

Well for starters clean the drains then areas would be less likely to flood. M1 North and south in JHB flooded last week due to dirty drains so clean the freaking drains it wont cost anything.
