Johannesburg - Gauteng residents must act responsibly over the festive season, Premier Nomvula Mokonyane said on Monday.

"Please don't drink and drive or walk...; don't look away when you know about the abuse of women and children; and lastly use money wisely as January is around the corner with schools opening," she said in a statement.

She urged people to remember the less fortunate during celebrations.

"Let us help those that are in need by showing compassion, especially to children and the aged."

"As we prepare to embark on this period of giving and sharing, let us embody Madiba's legacy and remember what he stood for."

Former president Nelson Mandela died on 5 December at his home in Johannesburg, and was buried in Qunu, in the Eastern Cape, 10 days later.
